Re: Just inoculated 2 TMS mycobags [Re: tenotoge]

Yea this 2nd flush will definitely be big just cuz this 1 right now doesn't have enough moisture.  I was gonna dunk the cake this past weekend, but after talking 2 a couple ppl they were like no wait [cuz the bottom was still colonizing]. Well right when the bottom was about to finish, I wake up the next day, and there's a bunch of pins on the sides and shit.  And the pins on the top don't look good - cuz it's too dry.  So I just wanna know what my best bet is - if it's, a) dunk the cake now w/ the pins and all, or b) wait for these to mature, pick them, then dunk.  I just don't know man.  This ain't gonna be a problem w/ my 2nd set of bags - cuz they colonized real quick, and the substrate still has a lot of moisture, but this is my 1st bag and I wanna do what's best for it.  I actually do wish I had a little FC set up for it, cuz I'd just dunk it right now and get it in there.

Well I'm not sure if what I just did was right, but here's what happened.  I set up a container to dunk the substrate in, and got all prepared.  Put gloves on, and cut the top of the bag open.  I popped it open, and that's when I saw something that changed all the plans - an even BIGGER mushroom that was hidden by the dirtiness of the substrate inside the bag.  This one was a solid 1.5" healthy looking mushroom coming from the top.  There was already a 1" one, and after really looking, there's more like 10-15 other pins on the side.  But I thought to myself, I can't go dunking this now, not only with all these pins - but these larger mushrooms I'm now seeing.

So what I did was just give the whole substrate and inside walls of the bag a really good misting.  I mean, the whole reason I was gonna dunk right now to begin with was cuz I thought the bag was too dry to produce anything worthwhile for this 1st flush - but I was totally proven wrong.  All this shit has popped up in the last 24 hrs too.  So I figure that misting gave some needed moisture to the top, so hopefully I can get some more pop up on there.  I just hate the fact that I have ALL those pins on the sides and shit.

Well hopefully I'm good and get no contams.  It's a 100% colonized sub, so I sure hope not.  The RH should definitely get back up to where it should be, so hopefully I get some monsters sprouting up in there.  That big one I found that was hidden definitely seems like it can get alot bigger, so I'll keep this updated.

yeah it'll be fine man. You may get some bruising/bluing from misting the cake directly, but no problem. Yeah the first flush gave me some huge ones when i did me bag too...i think i had two huge ones like 14gm each (wet). Yeah the pins on the sides....not sure but I think they would have like aborted had you left the cake in the bag.

No worries j3illy. The sub is 100% colonized. I have picked several flushes, then resealed the top up with paper-clips. Never had a prob. In fact, several times, it appeared to ACCELERATE the growth of the other pins, because of getting a blast of air to them. haha

Sorry guys, haven't been on for a few days - but those few days have seen tons of growth in that bag.  Just trying to guess, there's gotta be 30-40 shrooms in it!  And all I did was give it a nice thorough misting 3 days ago.

Well about 5 hrs ago I opened it up once more to pick out the 2 biggest shrooms to sample them, and the results were nice!  Here's a pic of those 2.

And here's a pic of what the bag looks like now, although it's tough to see everything that's going on inside there.  I'm not sure when to pick everything and give it a good dunk - probably in another day or so.  But there's so many little ones, so I'm not sure if I should leave them be, or just pick everything?

I don't think it'd really be worth it to tape the sides/bottom.  There's a reason most of the pins come out on the sides - it's cuz that's where the moisture/humidity is the highest.  And even tho the pins are coming out the sides, most of them still end up growing into the main area anyway.  Those 2 that I picked were like 5" before the veil broke, and there's more in the bag now approaching that size now.  And the ones that don't grow into the main area still end up growing, although they end up snarled looking lol.
