    #939655 - 10/07/02 01:19 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

The FAQ's say no to rolled grain.I beg to differ.I came across a bag of steam rolled barley for free so i had to try.1 cup of grain 2/3 cup water,P.C. 1 hr. 15 min.I tried puerto ricans and they flourished.Mazapatec, they like it too.I am growing tampanensis now (4 weeks)and the scelrotia has formed in only two weeks. The control jars of rye grass seed are far behind.Viva la barley.

Are you sure it was rolled grain? All rolled grain I have seen becomes porrige quickly after adding water.

After grain is harvested and cleaned (and in the case of oats, has its inedible outer shell removed) it is considered a whole grain. When this whole grain is passed through a machine that chops it into around four small pieces the grain is then referred to as "steel-cut." If this stell cut grain is steamed and passed through rollers to flatten it out it is called "rolled." Rolled grains all look similar to what you think of as American oatmeal. I believe the quick cooking kind are made by subjecting the rolled grains to a subsequent steaming or extending the steaming prior to rolling.

I wouldn't be surprised if most cubensis strains take to rolled grains (they will grow on brown rice flour--although that hasn't been steamed, just ground up--although not as effectively without the addition of something to make the substrate more porous, ie vermiculate). The problem would probably lie in birthing the "cake," since it probably is a congealed mess at this point. Get back to us when you have spawned or cased the colonized material that you have now.

This is Taz mycelium on 50/50 hulled millet and rolled rye grain in a tall half-pint. Although the mycelium wasn't very ryzomorphic, it did rip thought this mix in almost half the time as my BRF control jar.

I'm sorry to say that I never did fruit it. The cake was eaten one night in front an impromptu bon fire.

It provided a nice level 3 trip..........

I dont' know if crimped oats are considered rolled but cubensis doesn't colonize this medium very well. The mushrooms grown from crimped oats are considerably more potent than those grown on rye. Maybe higher concentrations of alkolids are created by adverse conditons where the mycelium really has to work by excreteing different enzymes to colonize certain mediums.
