Why no steam-sterilizing in bags? Yeah why?
    #3181977 - 09/26/04 07:09 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

When, I see all the bag/oven bag teks they're always PC'd, I know that whole grain can't just be steamed/boiled like BRF can but, if I made some PF classic style subsstrate and boiled it like my jars (which I have very little contams, when everything goes right that is) and innoculated with plain 'ole spores a la syringe wouldn't it work?

BTW I'm planning on using a homemade oven bag with a polyfill neck covered in aluminum foil boiled for 2 hours. PF BRF mix ofcourse.

one more quick question: when someone uses a poly-fill system do they have to soak it with alky before innoculation? or just the needle?

answers/comments from experts?

Sounds like an interesting experiment. Give it a shot and report back to us.

Using millet flour would probably render it more shakeable. Also I would steam it for longer, possibly much longer, like maybe 3 hours to make sure the center gets thoroughly cooked.

There is no reason to soak polyfil in alcohol that I know of.

for that project I would recomend a 3prong clamp
they'll support the neck of the bag aout of the water
and prevent the polyfill from getting wet

Well what I use to steam sterilize is preety small its just "cooking pot" funny thing is I use it for pasta and other non-myco funstuff I'd throw a digital up but, I forgot how to do that. What I will say is it BARELY holds three pint jars. 6 1/4" dia. X 4 1/2" dep. I just got my tape measure (I'm a DIY'er guy). My bags would be 5"diameter X 4"deep about as big as I could get the bags to go the things are going to "squeeze into" the pot the sides will hold it up. It would be so cool to have mushroom "cylinders" instead of mushroom jars. I'm waiting for spores right now and being very busy between school work and non-myco related projects but, I'll do it for the good of the community!

You guys have the funniest signature pics, I imagine hitler yelling somthing like: Ak! mein axle is ein inferior fur der furhrer's chevy!

and then I saw the little bunny/hampster thing and said "oh its so cute, what!? what the hell is that?!"

I'm sorry, I get amused very easily with mushrooms they make me just happy.

I have read some articles at www.mushworld.com where they also use steaming for pasteurization.
The sterilization times were between 4 and 20 hours.
