Dehydrating sterilized substrate for use later w/ steaming?
    #2308560 - 02/06/04 02:37 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Do you think grains could be sterilized in a pressure cooker, and then be dehydrated and stored in an airtight container for several months, and then be soaked, drained, put into jars and boiled/steamed (not PC'd)?

Would it contam?

Would it grow mycelium at least nearly as well as freshly PC'd grain?

I regret your friends disability, but if this friend can rehydrate the grain, put into jars and boil or steam, I think you could help him out more by sending him a pc...... seems that's all he is lacking. I see too many risks for contam along the way

if the grain is autoclaved and sealed ther should be no need to dehydrate it for storage. I have Autoclaved grain myself and used it about a month later with same results as i have innoculating it the day after sterilization.

How did you seal your jars?

you can seal it with the lid of the jar, a synthetic filter dish, or in an autoclavable bag. The lid is probably your best bet, as it will prevent maiosture loss due to evaporation.
