Curecat, I've heard of jack-o-lanterns, but I didn't know of any others. From what I've heard of jacks, they're only mildly bioluminescent. Then again, I've never found one myself...

Honey mushroom (Armillaria mellea) mycelium in rotting wood will glow in the dark if the humidity is high enough:



Here's another one: Panellus stipticus.

Brazil has lots of cool bioluminescent species too.

I tried asking Dr. Desjardin for spores but he said it's illegal to export them. :frown:

Dennis does a really awesome presentation on bioluminescent fungi, there are tons!!  They are all white spored. 
Locally we have Omphalotus olivascens (O. illudens on the East Coast, US), Panellus stipticus (more common in the East), and Armillaria species (all species, only the mycelium, known as "Fox Fire").

I've always had an affinity for bioluminescense. :shrug:


No clue why. Heck I've even went as far as cutting off firefly butts and putting them in hydrogen peroxide. Glowed very brightly for like 8 hours.

Yeah I know... Poor fireflies. I was young and dumb. Would never do it again.

Yeah, I have some O. olivascens in my room.  They glowed only faintly, though it was still detectable.  The younger ones glow the brightest.

Maybe lower PH will give them a more pronounced luminosity as with Panellus.

Worth a try.

No....  you want some gill fragments or something?  You could probably rehydrate them and put them on agar, and probably get some mycelium going to transfer.

Where are you located?  Are you sure you want to cultivate these?
