Yep, its true... It's called Omphalotus olearius or The Jack-O-Lantern Mushroom. They're poisonous, and the reason for their glowing is a waste metabolite that is produced by the mycelium.

Heres a pic I found:

They grow at the base of trees, mostly live oak and olive trees(not too many of those in the US). Sometimes they grow from rotting wood. I personaly have never knowingly found them, I'd love to find them though. If I ever find them I'll take some pics... I'll try to do a long exposure in a dark room, capture the glowing

Another glowing mushroom is the Honey Mushroom, Armillaria mellea. The mushroom itself doesn't glow, the mycelium does. In fact, "foxfire" is the name for glowing Honey Mushroom mycelium.

Look for Panellus stipticus, it glows brighter than the Jack-o-lantern or honey fungus. I think Spore Works still has some Panellus syringes that they never advertised so you might drop them an email. The mycelium glows faintly but the fruits are bright enough to read by. It will even glow on a petri dish.

It looks somewhat like an oyster mushroom and grows almost as easy.

Another glowing mushroom is Mycena chlorophos. Shown here at Fungi Perfecti glowing in a plastic growbag.

I have worked with this fungus and I could never get it to glow as much as the Panellus. It may need a very specific nutrient to glow well.

Here is the actual Mycena chlorophos mushroom.

In reply to:

Live Oaks are still proliferant in The California Napa Valley and Bay Area, along with Valley and Cork Oak to name just a couple.

Privately owned olive tree groves can be found in the Northern Central Valley area.

Good luck

I got (stole) an Omphalotus olearius specimen at a mushroom exhibition. But it was too dry to get a spore print and cloning failed

I wonder why are cultures of these so hard to get. I bet many people would buy them.

cool:)
you can imagine my disappointment when I took a look at my first plate of panellus mycelium in the dark, barely bright enough to be seen even in pitch darkness. don't suppose you happen to know the growing parameters offhand?

Heh... I always wondered what could possibly have glowing mycelium. I remember the first time I got drunk I was at a camp out in the middle of the woods and found a glowing peice of bark... I remember ranting and raving about the glowing thing for a good 30 or 40 minutes. I put it in my wallet and when I woke up the next morning I found a wood chip covered in mycelium, but it didn't glow anymore... bummer :P
