I found GLOW IN THE DARK mushrooms!
    #933789 - 10/05/02 01:47 AM (21 years, 6 months ago)

Does anyone know what these are.....

I was taking a stroll tonight through the woods after dark (a little intoxicated I might add) and there was this faint glow in the distance which kept catching my eye. On further inspection I discovered a rotting log covered with mushrooms that were giving of tons of green light.

This is in New Hampshire.
The mold was white and was growing on soft wood with mushrooms growing through the bark in the shape of ribbons.
The mushrooms were tan in color and had gills with white spores.

Please tell. I think I just turned into a mushroom geek. I never even imagined there was a species of mushroom that glowed.

I grabbed a small sample on some wood and will take a picture if I can get a hold of a camera.

Sound like you probably found Armillaria mellea, also known as Honey Mushrooms. What you observed (the glow on the wood) is called foxfire.

Happy mushrooming!

I just took a looked at a picture of this and that not what it is. This mushroom does not have a stem at all. It grows a semicircle cap straight out of the bark. Turns wavy with age and they grow in clumps.

It sounds like Panellus stipticus which grows on wood and is shaped like an oyster mushroom.

Yeah that's them. VERY COOL mushroom I might add. I may try to culture these just for the hell of it.

A yard full of glowing mushrooms would be very cool indeed.
