answer the lighting question once and for all

can someone who actually knows their shit give me a good answer to this question. i've heard everything from "they should get 12/12" to "it doesn't matter... the light they get from you opening up the terrarium to fan them is enough"... what's the real answer here? how much light do they need? will they really get enough from me just fanning them?

It is apparent from the varied answers that people have different luck doing different things. Mycology is all about experimenting so why don't you do that and find what works best for you???

They don't actually need any light to grow. Light is needed to initiate pinning and to tell the shrooms which way to grow, but I think it's stated in Stamet's (myco expert) books that a camera flash is even sufficient for this. Mushrooms will grow in complete darkness once pinning is initiated and I have seen no documented evidence that any light schedule significantly helps.

What kind & type of light does mother nature provide? Mother nature knows best (RIFGT). That should answer your question.

They can grow with little light, need some to initiate pinning & point them in the right direction. Everyones circumstance varies, as does their growing conditions.

There is NO diffinitive answer. What works well for some -- in some circumstance -- does not work as well for others -- in differing circumstance.

Test & find out what works for you, under your circumstance.
