False truffles

I don't know much about the anatomy of truffles so bare with me.  If you could please direct me to a good site on a truffle descriptions I would appreciate it. I found these when digging up some tomato plants in my back yard. they were attached to the roots. I found about 9 of them from 3 plants.  These are false truffles correct?


Habitat: Wood - Found in tomato Garden attached to the roots of cherry tomatoes.

Exterior- Light tan to tan

Interior- purple

Bruising: when interior is damaged it  changes to a darker hue of purple

Location: San diego garden.

Now I am really confused.  I think you are right though Alan. As I look at the gleba they look more like  Scleroderma cepa.  I found none that had a partial or immature gleba that I could associate with the growth patterns (reddening) of Scleroderma areolatum nor can I find any partial scaling or spots after removing the debris.

I am going to try and get them under the mic tonight and check them out.

:crazy: There are people who eat Scleroderma citrina as a substitute for truffles, when they are still young,
even though they are poisonous to some people. I've tried a little bit of
Scleroderma citrinum, didn't taste bad, but since I haven't had truffles, not sure how they compare.

They were anywhere from just below the surface to about 3-4 inches down on the roots I would say.  I wish I would have taken pictures of the roots with them still attached. They had mycelium wrapping around the roots and some of the roots were spread over the fruitbody as well. The soil was fairly dry also which I thought was interesting. I also found these with a friend last month on a puffball hunt. She informs me they are scleroderma  as well. 






They don't look very tasty.....

Yes. It's near a restoration project in San Clamente canyon. They planted tons of them. The area isn't doing so well. hasn't got much water in the past years so I guess they decided to plant some stuff and install sprinklers. Half the plants they planted there I have never seen there before. I don't know how they can call that restoration if they are destroying the area to create a new one. Such a dumb project if you ask me. Would have been better to just install the irrigation.
