I got too damn excited and didnt get a clear photo of the cross section. Fuck. You can bet i'll be back tomorrow for at LEAST another ounce. The marbling was very pale, the skin was very thin.

I agree. In southeast GA, I've gotten fairly familiar with Tuber lyonii, the Pecan Truffle. Sssssoooo my lovely girl came up to me with a ruined, crumbly fungal mass & the ol' familiar "What's this one?" I smelled it! I said it looked like a truffle (!) and to take me to where she found it. It had been partially submerged. None of the others had surfaced at all. In fact, one of the bigger ones was almost 5" deep. We just lucked out.
I took 'em to a schmancy chef in town and he freaked about the "aroma profile" & bought the lot (1.4oz). I think truffles smell like horrible poisonous stinky feet, but let the foodies celebrate them with money!

(totally not doubting the tentative swampyA ID or anything) but that is exactly what the skeptic in me is thinking, someone might be getting a scleroderma risotto sometime soon...

Exactly - even strong suspicion shouldn't pass as conclusive. One thing is if this chef was only cooking for himself, but serving it to other people on such a basis. Just no. No way.

When I first saw Swampy's post, I thought he had a Rhizopogon, or maybe one of the secotoid Russula species. But neither of those have an aroma that could be mistaken for truffles.
Doc and Angler, you guys both have a valid point. Seems horribly irresponsible to serve unidentified mushrooms. But this feels a little different. I guess it just doesn't seem that unusual that a chef would be able to recognize the distinctive aroma of a truffle.
Swampy: did you post this on MO? By the way, my wife follows you on instagram. If you get around Mt Shasta this fall, you should come mushroom hunting with us.

Chefs buy what they think is Chilean Seabass all the time and when it is examined it is quite often something else, I realize it has a certain smell but that doesn't make for 100% certainty

That said, it probably is a truffle of some variety.
but probably and definitely are wholly different concepts. Not Swampy's problem any way you slice it, that burden lays on the chef at this point.

If edible truffles are commonly picked for the table in Montana, I'd look at it from a slightly different angle.
I can't speak for myself though, having only smelled fresh white truffles in Italy.
I can't recall it smelling of horrible poisonous stinky feet, though.

Doc and Angler:
I should probably have made my comments in a PM, because this forum is not the place to advocate consumption prior to positive identification.
I've never smelled a real truffle, just the crap that they sell as truffle oil. A couple months after opening, that shit smells pretty horrible and nothing at all like food. I do like it when it's fresh, though.

girlfriend took a haul shot yesterday:

cross section from the single find today:

Today's find was on it's way out. The others had a much whiter marble.
I understand why a chef should know EXACTLY what he's feeding his customers, but isnt it a little more understandable in this case? Very pungeant truffles. Clearly not Rhizopogon or anything... I like Doc Ghosty's "probably," but I couldnt help but tell the man it was definitely a truffle... cause it is The kitchen was thick with truffle stank the second i opened the bag. Hell, I ate one the moment i found it! I like to eat my first little truffle finds, i heard they can make me wanna have sex
Species ideas? Tuber gibbosom? I guess that again only because the skin was incredibly thin. Thanks, yall.
