Are these truffles?

Okay, so I was hanging out with my friend today. We were at his house and he told me to walk off in a certain direction while he went and did something real quick. So I navigated to the area he informed me of and he arrived shortly after, to see me glaring at this peculiar potato-shaped bulb on the ground.

The first thing he said was "Dude, is that a truffle?!" I replied "I believe so" as we just looked at it with astonishment. The only part we were confused about is that we thought truffles were supposed to grow under the ground but after more research recently, we found that there may be a few rare occasions where they grow above the ground.

The only part is that I can't find what species they would be if they ARE truffles. I know they only tend to grow in certain locations. I live just barely between the midwest and northeast, in the lower part of Michigan. We found these in a little sumac forest, there were other trees around but mostly sumac and they had grown too high for them to be potentially harmful to the lungs.

I'm just wondering if the location would possibly have some kind of effect on the potential outcome of these truffles? if that's what they even are... I am still considering that we may be mistaking these for some kind of puffball mushroom but I can't find much info on what we found for either side.

There were tons of these laying aroung by themselves, so we gathered them up. Here are a few pictures.

Highly doubt they are "truffles" look like potato's.

We split one of them in half and they smell like mushrooms and have black fillings. I will be able to post another picture when my friend arrives today. These are definitely not potatoes but I'm still unsure of what they are. Also, they're not as hard as potatoes but they aren't as soft as typical mushrooms. Lastly, the location we found them in is probably what I would consider to be at a medium level of elevation.

Definitely potatoes... Possibly puffballs

I am still waiting on my partner to get here. But this may most definitely be what it was it seems like it. Do you know if those mushrooms are poisonous to eat?

Scleroderma species aren't edible.

Okay, my friend was considering eating one... I couldn't find much on this particular one but none of them had grown any warts or seemed to take the shape of a mushroom, they were just smooth all the way around and they were rooted into the ground as if they were potatoes. But when we cut one in half yesterday, it had a mushroom filling like truffles should. I'm waiting for him to get here now so we can cut another in half and take a pic.

Check out the North American Truffling Society for more info on truffle.

If you want more help identifying your truffle you will need to take a picture of one sliced open.

I agree with Mush4brains that they look like some species of Scleroderma.

Hopefully we can confirm this now. If truffles aren't around here then I can still look for yellow morals.
