Weeeeell, I wasn't gonna post this little guy... but I thought I'd show off my nails. 
There is nothing else to find around So Cal anyway, cept for these heat resistent mushrooms. I like the black and white spotted interior spore flesh of these mushrooms. It's very interesting.
My friend saw me leaving a store, and ran up and smothered me, I then presented them with this specimen... They said "What the hell is that thing?!" "A mushroom." "....are you sure?" "yes."
Please excuse my boring anecdotes... here are the pics.

is that edible? Is it a tuber?
oh and in your pix the ones that look black and weird they i believe are dead mans fingers or some sort of tongue.

What are you talking about????
Does this have anything to do with the puffballs? Because what you are referring to is Xyalaria polymorpha or Xylaria longipes. They are called "Earth tongues", they are not puffballs.
