Was taking a walk here in plains, montana. Came across a field of puffballs.

the inside is about the same color as the outside, white with a very slight (maybe light brown?) tinge, barely noticeable or its just me.
smells like your typical supermarket portobello.
the biggest one is about 2 or 3 inches tall. and nearly 4 inches wide. the top has little square bunches on it that looked like it was pinched into little square topped cones. as you can see in the picture. this was found growing in and around phalaris aquatica grass under pines.

Perhaps Calbovista subsculpta.

Puffballs aren't poisonous (at least none in the UK are) and are good eating, especially with some bacon and some scrambled eggs...
I'd eat it

the pines are ponderosa pines, and this is a montane area. which when looking at some pics on mykoweb, it says those ones were found under ponderosa pines, in a montane area.
everything I can see points to calbovista subsculpta, although im better safe than sorry. im also going to be eating this dinner with my boss, and i dont want her getting sick either. calbovista subsculpta isnt a choice mushroom, but soaked in crockpot'd buffalo roast juice, and fried on the pan with some butter. sounds delicious.

well you would eat a mushroom that you werent 100% sure what it was, therefor assuming it was edible... that seems like a bad assumption to anyone here. are you one of those kids who thinks anything on cow poo will get u trippin?

Hey ShroomieOfDoomie,
You get around a good bit these days.
I agree on the Calbovista subsculpta ID. I've never encountered them myself, but your description and photos perfectly match my field guide, which lists them as choice edibles. The only poisonous puffballs I am aware are purple or black on the inside.
Your proposed method of preparation sounds like it would be delicious.
Let us know how it turns out.

Those look like C. subsculpta to me, too.
Hope Miller recommends slicing them fairly thick, breading them, and frying them. Your way sounds good, too.
Happy mushrooming!

I knew it had something to do with the color inside, but I wanted to be sure before gobbling this down. puffballs are a fav of mine.
