Edible puffball species? Lycoperdon pyriforme?

Habitat:
Lawn and Bark
Gills:
None

Stem:
thick about 1 cm or 1.5

Cap:
1 to 1.5 cm in diameter, pretty round. It is light tan with brown specs with a slight amount of white on the outer perimeter of said specks.

Stem: Thick 1 cm

Spore print color:
? No idea how I could even tell.

Bruising:
Nada

Other information:
Smells like a mushroom. Only pulled one from the bark and about 1 to 1.5 cm of white mycelium came attached to it. White flesh.

Looks like the pictures I've seen of it but I'm a noob and just googled edible puffballs. :grin:

Thanks in advance guys. Hopefully I can cook these up for dinner as my first edible find!









Edit : P.S. It said on a site to cut each one in half to make sure its not an amanita button. How would I differentiate the two once I had cut them in half?

This is all a guess.

Appears to be  the Pear-shaped puffball (Lycoperdon pyriforme)

was the stalked attached by small strands like roots?

The Lycoperdon pyriforme is mostly gathered to be eaten when immature and pure white.


Please wait for a further ID from a trusted identifier before consuming.

Yeah it was attached to "roots" or mycellium - whatever they were. However I only pulled one from the bark. The ones in the grass didn't but I'm sure they just broke off. Thanks for the help and I'll definitely wait but the description of habitat and whatnot seems correct and they look identical. Not worth risking over though. Hopefully someone responds soon though so I can throw these bad boys in my eggs tommorrow morning. :wink:



Should I pick them and throw them in my fridge so they don't mature even more in case I can eat them?

I just picked a bunch of the larger ones but left the little guys and the millimeter sized pins. They all had these pretty thick "roots" and they were surprisingly strong. I had to try and grab the base with my fingers before I picked them or they would break off leaving the whole stem. Still going to  wait for a TI so I don't ruin my day tomorrow to say the least :P.

Nice puffballs.  I would eat them.  Make sure to check out and learn Scleroderma - The pigskin Poison puffball. It has a thicker skin, and is harder when fresh that the Lycoperdon.  http://botit.botany.wisc.edu/toms_fungi/scleroderma.html
Its a good one to also learn so you dont pick it by mistake.

Awesome my first edible. I appreciate the quick reply. Is there a certain way you reccomend I cook them? And also how big should they be so they taste the best? Because there's a bunch of pins and I would prefer to pick them in their prime. Thanks!

For taste it does not matter as long as their still white inside.  Make sure they are at least the size of a penny.  Smaller than that is not worth the trouble.  Their are many ways to eat them.  Simple is probably best for the first time.  Dip in egg then breadcrumbs then deep fry them.  Or cut them in half and saute them in butter then add them to leftover mashed potatoes with a little chedder cheese and fry in a pan to make puffball potato pancakes.  Or fry the in butter with some sliced potatoes, onions, and green peppers.  So many things you can do but simpler is best when trying a new mushroom.
