Edible Puffball "Dome of the Skull"?
    #15323445 - 11/04/11 06:00 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Hello, I am not very familiar with puffballs but I did a little research and found that the genus is Calvatia.  Which according to wiki the name Calvatia derives from the Latin calvus meaning "bald" and calvaria, meaning "dome of the skull".  It also says that most species are edible when young.  I am curious to know if these are edible and, if so, how do you prepare them?

Habitat: dirt that was lightly covered with landscaping woodchips.

Gills: gills are not visible

Stem: Whitish, extremely stubby, short, mycellium almost reaches cap

Cap: Light brown turning to tan as it wrapped around towards the stem. smooth,  .5"-1.5" inches in diameter.  The cap is filled with blackish powder.  Very light, indistinct odor.

Spore print color: none taken.

Bruising: Stem turned tan after I cut the mushroom in half.

Location: Picked in San Francisco area.

For a puffball to be edible it needs to be white throughout the inside. I think that one is poisonous

Looking at the gleba, I'm more inclined to think they are Scleroderma, perhaps S. cepa.

Ah, according to mushroomexpert.com, Scleroderma are "tough puffballs with blackish interiors, species of Scleroderma are sometimes called "earthballs" by field guide authors attempting to separate them from softer, fleshier puffballs"

That seems likely.  Nonedible then.
