Edible puffball? ID please
    #4221486 - 05/26/05 06:57 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

I found these this morning in grass. Unfortunately I didn't have a camera with me. The mushroom was cut at ground level.

I'm hoping it's an edible puffball.

a. Habitat:

Location: New Forest, Hampshire, UK (south coast).
Weather: Lots of rain a few days ago, dry since then.
Habitat: On raised heath/ grassland, horses graze this land.

b. Characteristics of the gills:

None.

c. Measurements of cap and stem:

Stem: 3 inches.
Cap: 5 inches.

d. Characteristics of the stem:

Stem very wide and virtually non-existant.

e. Characteristics of the cap:

Cap was spherical and started at the ground.

f. Spore print color:

No spores that I'm aware of.

g. Color that the mushroom bruises:

Doesn't bruise.

h. Scent of mushroom

Nutty mushroom smell.

Very interesting. It matches well with Calvatia booniana A.H.S. whose edibiltity is listed as "choice"
Spore mass is white becoming olive-brown, odor becoming unpleasant, is edible as long as it's interior is white.
I have never seen a puffball like that, so wait to hear from somebody who knows for sure.

peace

Thanks for the reply.

My books show smooth ones (calvatia gigantea) or spiny ones (lycoperdon perlatum or vascellum pratense), but none with that sort of hexagon pattern.

I didn't bother doing a spore print because I thought the spores develop in the centre when it's mature, should I think again?

There were a couple of slugs tucking into it when I found it, so I saw that as a good sign

Cheers

Edit: Oh, also it seemed kind of early for a puffball to be out, my books say they start around July, but the weather has been odd this year.

I'd be weary of that puffball, it has a close resemblance to a toxic species.

Take a look:

Thanks for the info Gumby.

I'd seen pictures of that, but none so far without the black spores inside:

Some differences: The skin hasn't stained pinkish when cut and isn't hard (same consistancy as the flesh, rubbery), also it's not at all yellow, just the same colour as the flesh. There's no smell of old rubber either, but maybe that develops.

Still, better safe.

I think it looks like a Lycoperdon, based on the stem and the look of bottom.jpg. At least one Lycoperdon (perlatum) is considered edible, but personally I think it tastes like crap.

Congratulations. That is indeed one of the various edible puffball species. The look of the warts suggests Calbovista subsculpta to me.

Distinguishing between the puffballs and earthballs is done most easily by noting that the earthballs are tough and relatively difficult to cut in half. The puffballs are much easier to cut.

As long as the gleba (spore mass inside) is still white it should be good for eating.

Happy mushrooming!

I'd have to say I agree with you, tasted a bit like cods roes with a sort of amyl nitrate aftertaste!

Interesting find. Last summer, I found something similar that was close to the size of a basketball! I always was curious about what they taste like, but never tried any.. maybe this year.
