Does portobello not LC well? I've done numerious LC's so far and only issues I've had are with portobello mycelium.

I took a tissue sample of a portobello from the grocery store a few weeks ago, doesn't look like it's doing so well.

You may not have the proper nutrients in your LCs, did you use malt extract? I'd try potato dextrose yest or those cookies for dogs.

Portobello grows fine in liquid cultures. Make sure you have a viable culture before you inoculate the liquid.

I have no idea if it was viable or not.  I just bought a pack of fresh mushrooms from the grocery store and took a biopsy from one of them.  Then I made beef vegetable mushroom stew :-D

Found this RR quote that probably explains it ->

For portobellas, sure!  Maybe.  I don't know, I've never tried growing them.  If they're close to crapping out, your best bet is to reset the clock by growing from a spore print.  Pick a nice looking fruit and clone that one.

I've gotten some very good king oyster, maitake and shimeji strains from grocery stores!
