Porta-what? Having trouble finding portobella LC online. Non-sponsor site?
    #13251407 -

Has anyone bought items from this place?
http://www.sporepod.com/US/mushroom-growing-edible-medicinal.html

I checked ALLLLL of the sponsors with no avail to portobella.

I dont want to buy spores (I hear they are a beiouch to germinate) and also i tried cloning farmers market and grocery store (yes i was desperate) with no success.

can anyone point me in the right direction to FINALLY get a culture??
(I just want to mind a good price and get it over with)

Most vendors sell their own isolated strains in either LC (culture syringe) or in the form of agar culture. Spores are usually cheaper because they require you to do a good amount of leg work before you begin making spawn.

I bought the one from sporeworks and could not get it to grow at all!

I tried WBS, Rye, Rye Grass, PDA with no success I think the one I received was dead so I asked them to replace it with another species.

It might have been something I did wrong but can't imagine what!

i think you guys need to remember that portabello is button (Agaricus) mushrooms in camo, there is a great deal of info available about growing agaricus online.

basically - make compost - pasteurize (mostly making compost and pasteurising is all the same process) - spawn with grain spawn (use the LC to make grain spawn trying to get a LC to grow in a pasteurized substrate will be difficult) - case (for microbes and moisture control) - control temp, CO2 and humidity and fruit them.

I always wonder about the appeal of growing a product that is as underpriced and of good quality as agaricus is at the shops (at least in Aus).

I can undestand for some of the exoctic and gourmet stuff that sells for $50 a kilo (if you can get it), but buttons are often $7 a kilo here. Doubt i could grow em for that...:frown:

Try cloning the "Crimini" mushroom, or small brown mushrooms that the grocer carries, it's the same mushroom as the Portabello, just the young button size.

You will find it easier to clone than the Portabello since it's still into rapid growth and not into spore production yet.

Odd they don't grow out the white ones as big as the Portabello(Crimini), I'd buy them full grown.

totally tried everything involving cloning, but they're just on the route to dying.  Having a better P value and better grower is deff worth the $ and time saved

have you tried any Agaricus?

they are near impossible to germinate on their own.

I have (had) an Agaricus print I took from a mushroom kit I bought at the local nursery. It was my first real grow of anything, and the print wasn't taken under the best conditions. I have since grown others fine and am better at printing now.

I took that print out a month ago spread some spores on Agar. They seemed to germinate fine, although slow, and even the mycelium is growing very slow. I transfered to a wbs jar and it's still growing, but slow. It looks healthy but I'm not 100% sure given the print was basicly taken in the open without a glass or anything over it.

I guess my point is, either I have a contamination that looks healthy but grows slow(quite possible), or the spores seemed to germinate easily.

How about adding some compost to the agar mix? It might just hate the agar.

I remember reading that spore germination is added by certain types of bacterial contams, so it sounds like you got real lucky.

This has to be a myth. If spawn producers made an unhealthy product and sold it to farmers, it would be more likely to not produce. This would cost the spawn producers a bunch in lost customers. They don't care if someone captures their strain, you don't have the resources to compete with them. And their rivals won't steal their patented strains because their invested in their own strains and getting caught would probably put them out of business.
You should try again with Crimini. Look for young buttons that haven't been wrapped in plastic to clone.

Yeah I've heard over and over that producers only use tired strains that don't produce if you clone them.

Honestly I have 3 strains of mushrooms in the other room cloned from grocery store mushrooms.

And the king oyster is pinning in the agar plate.

I think the point is just that commercial growers are going to stretch their cultures as far as they can so there's probably a better chance that the mushroom you are cloning is kind of tired.  It's not that they are intentionally only growing tired cultures to keep you from cloning.

I've cloned a few species from the farmer's market.  The king oyster clones were awesome and I just fruited my first two blocks.  The maitake is really slow.  I dunno if maitakes are slow in general but it seems like not a great culture in general.

I'm taking about the actual tissue.  The mushrooms are shipped great distances under refrigeration etc.  the tissues themselves are not in great condition.

could you clone a 100 year old human? yes
would the clone prosper? hum...
