I want to adopt a ferret
    #9157632 -

I have been considering buying a ferret or two for a while now, but now I am finally ready to make the purchase.

At first it seemed like a good idea to go w/ a pet store/breeder that had them descented, but I've read that the scent is a response to fear and only minimal (compared to a bad fart) that will dissipate fairly quickly.  With this in mind I think it would be beneficial to know when the animal is fearful, and I believe the descenting would be an unnecessary operation.

This leaves me wanting to perhaps adopt one or more ferrets from a shelter.  Does anyone know of a shelter w/ ferrets?

i'm not trying to piss in your cheerios, but thats not the only scent you'll have to put up with. they smell like ammonia/piss all the time. i don't know if "descenting" can help with that.

Yeah, I was friends with a woman who had ferrets. Cute and playful, but they stunk. :argh:

Yeah, ferrets stink. I had two a couple years ago that were de-scented, and they stunk up everything like musk.

And they hard to train to use the litter box because they miss. When they are younger they get under a dresser and shit in the corner. It is a hassle. They are sweet animals, and are fun to play with, but are a serious responsibility.

Get a snake. You don't have to do anything with a snake, but feed it rats. And buy a terrarium. On second thought, get a hermit crab.

Yeah you can't fully remove all of the ferrets scent glands. Ferrets are cool as hell but they can get stinky and they poop ALL THE TIME. They can easily be litter box trained though. I'd consider getting one but I don't feel like "ferret proofing" my apartment.

Also, let's not forget - let's *not* forget, Dude - that keeping wildlife, an amphibious rodent, for uh, domestic, you know, within the city - that aint legal either.

Depends on where you live. They didn't legalize ferrets in Georgia until about 10 years ago. And only neutered ferrets were legal to keep. Hedgehogs and sugar gliders are illegal there, have to have a license to keep them.

I have ferrets - 6 of them.  They're all litterbox trained, and they don't stink unless we don't change their boxes for a day.  Get a descented one - trust me.  You'll know if they're scared regardless, because they'll shriek and jump at you.  Ours are all trained to be friendly and not nip/bite.  Where do you live...I know of a few ferrets shelters around Boston, near me.

Im in NC, I have found a few on craigslist that are local to my area and I will be helping previous owners (most are students who have graduated and are off to work) who don't have time to devote to them like they once could.  I will take your advice and be sure they are descented, I'd rather keep the smell to a minimum.  I handled one at the pet store and got an idea of their muskiness, not unbearable considering I usually smell worse  :hehehe:

I actually like their smell.  It's their litter boxes that smell bad, not them   I would try to get aferret that is litter box trained.

I used to have four of them. Great pets, they can't stop moving.  A lot of fun to have around.  Don't leave bags of pot on the floor where they can get at them, they love to toss the buds around in all directions.  Mine were descented but they still need a bath once a week so they don't start to stink.

You can't descent a ferret, since that means skinning them pretty much. They pretty much sweat that musk. It isn't like a skunk, where you can just remove the gland.

actually that's precisely what the procedure calls for...but of course like you said it will not affect their normal body odor.  their just musky like that, but I have to agree with Liz, its not that bad.

. It is true that they have a distinctly musky odor about them, but it is neither offensive nor overpowering. This musky odor comes from their skin glands and is present whether the ferret is descented or not.

I agree that the odor isn't that bad. Like Liz said, you just gotta keep up with giving them baths.

I've had ferrets for years man.  Anyone who has ferrets that smell bad isn't taking care of their cage.

Shoot me a PM if you have questions.

QFT.

I had to lock my pot up, because my female would go running with it around the house.  I'd find a 10 foot trail of nugs laying around.  She would steal it out of my backpack, drawers, jacket, pants.

Not good when the parents come to visit.
