Tonight my boyfriend and I are going to pick up a ferret. Rather than buy one from a pet store, we're adopting one that needs a new home. She's 2 and 1/2 years old, and very cute. Her name right now is "Hero". I don't know how I feel about that name. I also don't know if she responds to her name or not. If she does, I'm obviously not going to change it and confuse the poor little girl. If she doesn't though, what do you guys think a good name would be? I like the names Fuzzy and Penelope, but I'm open to suggestions. I'll be taking more pictures when we get home with her, it will be interesting to see how Lucy takes to a little ferret bouncing around

Nice, I always liked them when I was younger - the ones I was around were very energetic, friendly, and playful. Been a while since I was around one.

My boyfriend has had ferrets before, but I haven't. I've always wanted one, and I'm happy that the situation worked out the way it did. The ferret's owner is going to medical school and cannot bring her, so she's giving her to us for free. She's also giving us her big cage, hammock, bedding, food, stuffed octopus that is apparently her favorite toy, litter box, litter, etc. She wanted to give it all for free, but I'm giving her $50 just so that I don't feel like I'm robbing her.

Yeah ferret's can get into really small places, so it's very important to ferret proof. The most dangerous thing is the kitchen, where the get behind the dishwasher, fridge, etc. We have a door to our kitchen though, that always remains shut (so the puppy can't get in there) so that's not an issue.

Yeah definitely, they get upset if they're not played with a lot. She's been a single ferret since she was a baby, so we're not separating her from a cage mate or anything. We're going to take care of her for a few months, see how it goes, and if we think it's do-able, we'll get another one so they can play with eachother and hang out. Also though, my dog LOVES little animals, and she's very gentle, so I bet they'll play together. Obviously it will be under extremely close supervision, especially at first

Very nice looking . And that is nice that your adopting one. I shop at Petco all the time, and I see theirs, out front in glass display cases,You would think that those beautiful living creatures are just some worthless jewerly, the way they have them caged up.

Just so you know, among us veteran ferret owners there's a concept called "ferret multiplication".
So just a heads up, you probably won't stop with just one, they're too damn cute when they play with each other.

My old roommate had a ferret.
Very social little creature. Could be trusted to scamper about the house. Had quite a taste for beer too

Awwww! She's cute! She looks like my little girl. I have two names for m ferrets. One for when their in trouble and one i use for regular use. Something I learned in a book. I'd show you a video I have of my two little loves, but I don't know how to upload videos on here. Good luck! If you little train them, you can have them out as long as your doggy doesn't mind them. My dog and cat don't mess with them so they get to run around the house sometimes. Though it's still best to have a cage.

We've been getting them acclimated to each other slowly. My dog is still a puppy, so is very excitable, especially by a little wriggly animal that she is completely unfamiliar with! She's been pretty gentle so far though, and has been mostly licking the ferret and burrowing her nose in her fur
theuser - I definitely spent a long time reading about ferrets before we made the leap to get one. Like I said, my boyfriend had 2, and we live together, so he's more used to them than I am, but I feel well prepared after hours on the internet reading about their care and personalities.
We've put a pillow case in her hammock that she sleeps in, and she loves burrowing under it to nap. My boyfriend says she's the calmest, gentlest ferret he's ever seen. She likes to be held, and lays on her back in your arm if you scratch her tummy and under her chin, and goes to sleep. She doesn't nip, ever, which is nice. Her claws need to be cut BADLY, so right now they're kind of deadly, but that will be dealt with soon.

ABZ - I think that's mostly how it happens, they get stuck somewhere dangerous, like the fridge, or the dishwasher. Or they find a tiny hole in the wall, get stuck there, and die because noone can find them. They're natural burrowers and love small places, so they think it's a game to be in the tightest spot possible.

Some just stink more than others. Do not be embarresed to sniff them when you pick them out, better than having a smelly pet forever. Also only wash them every 2 months or so, over washing them will make them stink more as they need to replace the oil on their coats.
Google around for ferrets. Also there are a lot of good ferret forums out there with other pros.

This ferret doesn't really smell much. The only time I've come across ferrets that smelled really bad was when the owners didn't clean the cage enough, and the ferret had poop on it. Otherwise it's just sort of a light musky smell, which doesn't bother me. We went to Petco today and got her a ball to run around in, some toys, a leash and some treats. We're going to bring her to the tennis courts tomorrow and let her run around in the ball. She's SUCH a sweet girl! Even when my dog was in her face, and she must have been a little freaked out, she didn't nip, or scratch or anything. I really think this was a good decision, and I'm really happy with things so far

Why a ball to run around in? We let ours out and run around the house once a day, however you do have to "de-ferret" your house.

Maybe the dog would eat it? Or maybe you have little kids...
I'm glad you like your ferret. My friend had one that smelled like honey, for real. Lucky bastard.

we figured the ball was a good idea because we have a big tennis court in back of our house that we're going to bring her to, and we'll let her roll around in the ball down there Our dog wouldn't eat it, and we don't have kids (thank god!)

Good thinking on the kids! Sounds awesome. We just tried that ferret shampoo today that is suppose to totally get rid of the smell. I'll let you know how it works, I bet it's BS. They don't smell much but they needed a bath anyway (had flea's from the boarding house...) so I figured I'd try it.
I recommend 2 ferrets cause a solo one will usually not be as social w/ humans as one that has a buddy 24/7. However I guess maybe that one has been alone for 2 years now?
I love talking about ferrets...

I do too, now that I have one!! She's REALLY social with humans. I hold her and she falls asleep while I pet her, and she's really cool about just hanging out on my shoulder She's really freakin cute. I wish she didn't sleep so much though! I keep wanting to go in there and play with her, and she's sleeping
