ferrets?
    #8746397 -

My boyfriend and I were considering adopting a ferret. Anyone have any experience with ferrets? Any advice while adopting? General thoughts...

Ferrets are really annoyingly curious, they get into everything including under your cabinets, behind your stove, on top of your refrigerator, and inside your walls if they can (and they'll probably find a way). They also really like to dig in stuff, so they'll destroy houseplants, boxes of packing peanuts, bags of dogfood, your carpet, your security deposit, etc. And I haven't had the best luck litter training them. They're also very active so you can't just keep them caged up. Oh and on top of that you'll probably want to get at least two so they aren't lonely. Honestly, having owned a number of ferrets over the years, my advice is to go admire the cute little babies at the pet store and then adopt a nice kitten or something.

A friend of mine had two ferrets.  They were cool to play with, but they stunk bad.  They are rodents after-all.

My boyfriend is home alot so they'd probably get all the attention they could handle, plus he's not affraid to bathe the cat so I dont think they get to stink lol. . . as much anyway.

First of all, ferrets are not rodents.
They're more related to skunks, weasels and stoats.
They are good hunters, and pretty vicious killers when they find mice/rats or rabbits.

You'll have to ferret-proof your home if you get one.  My female almost died after chewing off and swallowing a piece of an earplug.  Luckily I have a father who has a soft spot for my animals, and he dropped $1200 for her surgery.
They will dig into potted plants, and plastic bags for some reason.  See the temperament of the ferret first.  My male is the most chilled out animal I've ever seen.  He doesn't bite or steal.  My female on the other hand, loves to bite, steal shoes, remote controls, MP3 players, even things that weigh much more than her.
They get along great with my dog, but my cat hates them.
If you get one, you should get two, unless you have a lot of time to spend playing with them when you let them out, which you should do daily.
They sleep about 20 hours a day, but need AT LEAST an hour of playtime a day.  Their antics are really ridiculous, and I love my ferrets.
You can also cook a chicken breast every once in a while, shred it and mix it in with their kibble, it seems to give mine a much healthier appetite and more energy.
Lastly, they shouldn't stink as long as you bathe them once every couple weeks, and clean their droppings from their cage every other or every three days.  Their skin will dry out and they will itch if you bathe them too often.

They're really hyper, and still stink a lot even if you bath them.

But they are super cute.

I wouldn't get one though

After talking to a few people I don't think we'll be getting any ferrets anytime soon but all the info was good to know for future refernce. . . Maybe when we have a little more money....

one of my roommates had a ferret a couple years ago.

it was ok...i wouldnt buy one though.  it was wayyy too hyper and wouldnt let you hold it or anything.  it just wanted to run around and sniff everything.
he had its glands taken out, but they still have a very distinct smell to them.  the room we kept his cage in was always very smelly from him and his shit.  you have to clean their cages like everyday if you dont want a horrible smelly shit mess.

another friend had an older one and it was cool.  it was chilled out and let people hold it and pet it.  he said it took like 5 years or so....i forget.
