To Flip or not to Flip (my PF cake)
    #914217 - 09/28/02 05:21 AM (14 years, 2 months ago)

When I birthed my first PF cake, I forgot to scrape away the 1/2 inch of verm at the top of the jar. So now, that verm is underneath my cake. Well, its from that verm that I'm getting 90% of my pins. So for fun, I flipped the cake over and BAM, there's about 100 healthy pins. Before, I could only see around 25 or 30. So I'm leaving it upside down with the verm facing up so the pins can get some better lighting. Anyone ever done this before? Am I going down a path towards ruining a cake? Comments? Insults?

I've read teks that have said to put a moist layer of verm on the top of your cakes, so it should work, though I can't say from experience.

I think that the verm acts as a makeshift casing... if you know what i mean. I scrape my verm off but i always have verm side up because i find i get better friuts with verm up.

what Skikid16 is refering too, is the double end cake. i do that with most of my cakes too. ive noticed the same thing. so i keep my verm on there sometimes, and just keep it moist. it works as a casing on a cake in a way. i dont know about other cultavist, but if i see pins coming from around where the verm used to be, i put those up towards the light, it just seems like sense to me.

I agree that it has to do with it being kind of a make shift casing. With the last batch I saw that was done, and it worked well. Another thing that I thought was interesting, the cakes had been broken into 3 pieces each, this gave them more surface to fuzz/knot/pin and the flushes were awesome. Though I was told they were broken after the first flush.

good luck
