Five inmates consume hallucinogenic plants

MANATEE — Five inmates were taken to local hospitals after they told deputies they consumed hallucinogenic plants while doing road work today, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

The inmates ate the plants when they were cleaning ditches near a mobile home park, Leisure Lake Co-Op in the 3000 block of U.S. 41 North in Palmetto, said Public Information Officer Dave Bristow.

Deputies noticed the inmates acting strangely at about 3 p.m., he said.

When they were questioned, they said they had eaten angel trumpets, Bristow said.

Paramedics checked the five men. Three were taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital and two were taken to Lakewood Ranch Medical Center for treatment.

The inmates were all on the road gang and were serving jail sentences up to one year, Bristow said.

No criminal charges are expected to be filed against the men. No one witnessed them eating the plants. Bristow said the men will face disciplinary action at the jail.

i mean what could they legally charge them with if they weren't in jail....for example say if someone seen someone eat a plant and called the cops on them,legally could the cops arrest them if they,A.)weren't on probation or parole B.)driving a car or trespassing in any way shape form or fashion
All I am saying is if someone seen somebody eat a plant but they weren't harming anyone in any way shape or form could the cops legally do anything about it?
I'm sure they would take them to jail for some "other" reason and just charge them with some bogus shit anyways.
Sorry I just think shit like this is absurd!

What about public intoxication? Datura is intoxicating to the point where a person under the influence can be a danger to others.

those are some smart inmates, i didn't even know that plant was hallucinogenic. i would have walked right pass it and not even know.

It is a delierant rather than an hallucinogen.  Pretty nasty stuff where you cannot tell the difference between the hell you are in and reality.

I first heard of angel trumpet a few years ago. I think the ONLY way Id do atropane alkaloids is if I was in those guys shoes. If I was in jail/prison Id do just about anything to catch a buzz.

this is true, i got a good friend doin some time, and randomly i got an IM from him and was like wtf man your in prison! lol but that lasted very shortly they found out.

No internet in Vermont USA prisons.  The inmates will get a rule violation of some sort for behavior which causes interferance with the orderly operation of the facility or some sorta crap like that. But if you gotta do time, Vermont is laid back!

I would think that the prison guards, and ultimately the prison administration is responsible for the behavior and safety of prisoners working on road detail. If they were going to charge the prisoners with a crime, the guards would be on the hook too, to some extent.

The prison guards took them to the hospital to cover their ass.  I am pretty sure the administration isn't responsible for action of the inmates unless there was proven negligence.  If they dicovered an issue and gave care and assistance they will make out.  I also doubt the inmates will get a "street charge" out of it, just a RV or DR or whatever they call it in Florida.  If you've done any time, you know it isn't what happened that counts...it's what ended up in the reports!
