Boy Nearly Dies After Ingesting Plant Seeds

By Jerry Burke

Appleton police say a little-known hallucinogenic drug came very close to killing a 16-year-old boy. Doctors told the parents of Zachery Nabbefeld of Appleton that it will be three to five days before he recovers from the effects of taking Datura.

Datura is a plant with seeds that cause hallucinations. Zachery ingested a very large dose.

Drug experts tell us Datura can be grown just about anywhere. In its protective casing, Datura looks like a chestnut with spines. It's the small seeds inside that make Datura dangerous.

Datura has been around for centuries and has been used by a lot of tribes to create hallucinogenic trances and for medicinal purposes.

According to police sources, Zachery ingested about 60 of the seeds Monday night and became very sick. Police say several other teenagers ingested lesser amounts. We're not being told the effect Datura had on them.

Police feel right now Datura is not a common drug in our area. Sgt. Pat DeWall, Appleton Police Department, said, "I think, just based upon the fact that we haven't heard of anything through our own investigations, some of our own contacts, and then also with the state drugs agents, I think it's more indicative that this is more of a rare occurrence as opposed to something occurring on a frequent basis."

Police are warning parents to be alert to what Datura looks like, especially in its seed form.

Thats pretty funny that they never heard of kinds using this before. Any newspaper has reports of kids getting sick while trying to get high from this plant. Usually you hear about them smoking it though. Or maybe the paper doesn't know that this is also called Jimpson Weed.

The red grass, up to my knees
An aura comes towards me

Someone's changed the formula
Un-chaining another law

The structures, the colors
Uniform chaos is alternating

The nature of things

How to Identify Hallucinogenic Plant
Oct 18, 2005, 04:22 PM PDT
By Kathryn Bracho

Datura plant (seed pod is the spiky fruit in the center)

Sixteen-year-old Zachery Nabbefeld's parents say their son bought Datura seeds from a Green Bay teenager. When he ingested about 60 of the seeds, he began hallucinating and then nearly died, police say.

People can get Datura seeds a couple of different ways. Seeds of the plant are for sale on many Internet web sites. Some people buy it and grow the plant in or around their homes. The plant, a weed, can be identified by trumpet-shaped leaves and a seed pod that looks like a chestnut with spines.

Horticultural experts say when seeds from those home plants get blown around by the wind, Datura can crop up in the wild, though that's rare in our part of the state. Experts say Datura is a plant that grows better in warmer climates.

"It doesn't seem to have been found growing out of cultivation in the northern part of the state. Most of the Wisconsin records are from the far two southern tiers of counties," said Gary Fewless, a botanist at U.W.-Green Bay.

Datura seeds aren't illegal in Wisconsin and the federal government doesn't regulate them, either. That means it's up to individual states to decide if they're legal.

Six states -- Connecticut, Louisiana, Nevada, New Jersey, Oklahoma, and Tennessee -- have laws banning Datura seeds.

It's only been found a few times in our part of the state, including a specimen collected in Brown County, but experts say the Datura plant is gaining a foothold in southern counties.

"Not only can it escape from cultivation but it can persist on those sites, so there are certain places where it can grow and set seeds and grow again and so forth, but not commonly," Fewless said, "And not here, not to the best of my knowledge."

The plant is rare in the wild in our area, but if you think you may have Datura growing near you and need help identifying it, you can contact U.W.-Extension offices in your count.
