Let me just say that Dreams, Delirium and Psychosis truely and genuinely are one and the same thing, but the latter two are waking dreams brought about by intoxication (delirium) and neuropsychological derangements. (like in schizophrenia)

There is a fundamental difference between normal waking states and anxiety, depression etc. as these negative states radically alter the brain chemistry. You know about war vets, incest victims, hate crime victims getting "fucked up" for years on end. Yet particularly wonderfull events will not be likely to make you "blissed up" for years to the same degree.

Anxiety, terror, depression, pain etc are associated with situations that may be crucial for organismic survival. Since your DNA is selfish and just wants to procreate it is geared to be a bad parent by readily hurting you with phobia, post traumatic stress disorder, anxiety- and panic disorders and be a bit sparse with rewards, using them almost like a lure. (How come an acute orgasm doesnt last for hours and most aren't as thunderstruck as in the penny "romantic" woman's novels? Because rolling on the forest floor in ecstasy for hours might get you and more importantly your offspring killed.)

Likewise there is a kind of dreaming that is associated with neutrality/positiveness and a particularly cruel Shadow side.
"Dreamscape" is associated strongly with lifelike symbolic representations (situations) and most characteristically: auditory hallucinations and trance logic, automatic speech, reality confusion and AMNESIA. (remember your dream as well as any other thing that happened 5 minutes after the fact?)

Sleep deprivation, other sensory deprivation states, Salvia Divinorum, Fly Agaric and MDMA overdose tend towards neutral dreamstates. (psychedelics do not: they stand so far from dreams that they're in a visionary class of their own.

The Nightshades (Datura, Atropa, Hyoscyamus, Brugmansia, Dubiosia, Scopolia and Mandragora), the Tropane Herbs, as well as alcohol delirium and prologed (schizophrenic) hallucinatory psychosis literally are NIGHTMARE DRUGS.

But you cannot believe how intense nightmares are! Mother nature shrouds them in hefty amnesia as to not self-traumatise, but Tropanes and Psychosis go beyond the self-protection mechanism either by chemical imbalance due to a drug or a weakness in the genes composition that make the brain happen.

Many fools at Erowid turn in amusing little anecdotes. How they pass cigarettes to imaginary friends, talk to furniture and how they run around the street naked bashing windows in with their heads.

This is classic medievel insanity that went unchecked for decades.
The acts are inconceivable, but his world was the literal wide awake nightmare that bears simularity to genuine tropane visions, except Ed Gein lived them to the point of actually exhuming dead women from the local cemetary and killing those he needed for his "artistic expressions of his innermost mind".

The particular cluster of Tropanes constitutes a sense of demonic presence (not necessarily Evil in the Christian sense, in fact I never encountered "true Evil") atrocities (note the Atropos root? It is The Horror and Atropa was the Greek "fate" who cut the thread of life when a mortal died. Atropine sounds less fun now, does it? I call the Realm of Nightmares "Atropia") and sexual arousal. Emphasis lies on Demonic/Orgy elements. This heathen orgy of witches may in fact have taken place, the Demons conjured up by Witching Herbs and far more true to "pagan symbols" as christianity as long before christianity conquered Rome, into Stonehenge time Europe, rituals were led by a high priest and Horned Gods and Satyrs tell of non-evil horned (and, well, sometimes horny) neutral or benevolent entities.

The Cthulu-stories are very Atropian and in fact the "Satanic Church" has more or less done away with Christianity's Devil in favor of HP Lovecraft-like maddening demons. (Akin to the movie "in the mouth of madness" for those who dont like to read horror;))

When hunting Witches in olden times it was usual to let physical torture be accompanied by Tropane herb poisoning. In a particularly cruel later-day torture a big thorn-apple (the genus reached us through the Middle East) was crammed up a person's mouth, who was then gagged and torture resumed.
This is hardly conductive to a "good trip", in fact Tropanes bring true poisoning along with their nightmare/delirium/psychosis nature.

The Truely Just wouldnt die of torture: The Lord would protect the righteous. And since none were spared, they had to be witches, al of them.

You can understand that a confession elicited by torture, spoken from deeply within Atropia would hardly conform to concensus reality. In fact there were common themes.
DMT has its Elves, Atropia has its Demons.

The Nightmare/Atropia world within us, the one that can drive you mad at it is genuine madness itself, has common themes from Bali to the Blocksberg to Bolivia. Just like concensus reality, or LSD, it has a degree of consistency too it.
