why are some people smarter than others?

Today I had a conversation with a friend who is very "smart". He has a very efficient brain when it comes to doing math (99% average), playing chess (beat a Master for a $600 handcrafted chessboard, won multiple tournaments) and remembering things. Why is his brain more efficient than the average person? Are there any theories why "gifted" people are gifted?
My theory is that neurotransmitters in his brain somehow take "shortcuts" that link directly with brain parts that deal with analytical thinking and memory storage. He claims it's just luck.

i don't think it's genetic.... i think it has something to do with the stimuli you got when your brain was developing... if you take an average japanese person, for instance... it will be "smarter" than the average european... and the average european will be smarter than the average american... the japanese has a HUGE language to learn and deal with, memorize symbols, different meanings, pronounciation (an average japanese person knows only 1/3 of his own language)... so his brain is constantly stimulated... the european is your average person, not so different from the american, but when it comes to education... i must be honest i think the education people in america get sucks big time... people in the states are raised to be dumb and follow like sheep... the people on this board are the exception, and i am thankful for them... a lot of great minds in here... but well... i guess every mind has equal potential, it all comes to how it is raised, educated and used... then again some parts of the mind work better for some individuals than for others... every person has its gifts, and its weaknesses... but there is nothing that can't be learned...

I've been trying to think of a reply to this... and I realised: so called 'Great' minds = Aware minds.
I belive being "smart" is just a matter of how expanded ones awareness is. With enough free time, one could exapnd their awareness into many different fields, thus becoming "smarter". Some people use their free time doing constructive things, like reading, creating art, debating, etc. A large number of people in this country spend their free time putting in over time on the job, watching tv, abusing their bodies (explosive sports like football etc.) and, when they're lucky, lying on beaches getting skin cancer and drinking alcoholic drinks. I say this assuming chodamunky was referring to people in Amerika in his post...

if it's not genetic, then please explain why some adopted children have vastly differing IQ's from their adoptive parents, and why asian-americans who have been raised in our culture and in our schools still perform significantly higher on standardized tests.

your theory is wack for obvious reasons. why don't you get a degree in neuroscience or neurobiology or the ilk... then you can have something approximating true knowledge instead of all of these wild conjectures and hair brained "theories."

lmfao what? I don't know of any neuroscientist that believes intelligence isn't at least in part determined by genetics.

It is a combination of nature and nurture, genetics and environment.

I hate those cheesey movies where two "highly intelligent" people are playing chess and one guy says,"Check!". The opponent looks stunned for a moment, then pushes a piece and proclaims, "Checkmate!"

lole. though it is possible that getting oneself out of check can also lead to checkmating your opponent, it's more likely that the writer/director of the movie doesn't know how to play chess

Yes, I know exactly what you mean.
These two moves are actually historic. They are the last two moves, the first by Spassky, the second by Fischer, in the tournament held in the 70's.
