Wall Street came back in a big way today.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed the first day of trading this week up more than 900 points.

It's by far the biggest-ever one-day point gain in the history of the Dow.

I call it market instability.

Do you know WHY the financial markets rallied?

Fed Releases Flood of Dollars, Market Rates Fall

"The European Central Bank, the Bank of England and the Swiss National Bank will offer European banks unlimited dollar funds with maturities of seven, 28 and 84 days at fixed interest rates against ``appropriate collateral,'' the Washington-based Fed said today. Previously, the Fed had capped at $380 billion the currency it would swap with the three central banks.

Global economic leaders have redoubled efforts to unfreeze credit markets and avert the worst worldwide recession in 30 years after last week's 20 percent slide in the MSCI World Index. Policy makers from the Group of Seven nations are committed to taking ``all necessary steps'' to stem a market panic, and European and U.S. governments today outlined plans to avoid bank failures. I wouldn't give credit to anyone. The credit market is still fucked up right now and that's what the "bailout" was suppose to fix.

Like I said before this "bailout" is a bad idea. It's like putting a band aid on a gunshot wound. It may stop the bleeding for now, but whats happening inside?

I predicted a 3% up gap (+-2) at the opening across seas (it was 4).  The rest, as Pinkfloyd states, is market instability.

The only upside to these kind of large gaps are that aftermarket trading is much more correlated with the regular market (especially down gaps).  I forget the numbers, but its something to the tune of 50%.

My port is still up 17.06% today though, largely in part to a 86.98% gain by Morgan Stanley (praise allah).  So I gained back almost all of what I lost last week.  Would have been nice if I were smart enough to soften my positions more last week though.
