Doktor Dung, could you give me some specifics on you method (cottonwood chips or dust, colonization time, and most especeially fruiting. Just stick in a terrarium?)

The tek I'm trying on these shiitake is kind of a mix or PF tek, 9'ers ideas, and stamet's formula. I have never grown shiitake this way before, only in the more traditional 5 lb bags. It is just a test to see how well it might work. Supposedly the chinese grow shiitake on smaller woodchip logs like these, but bigger blocks would be better.

The cottonwood chips I used are fresh. I chopped off some branches. brought them home and chipped them up with a Black-n-Decker power plane.

The strain is just a clone of a mushroom bought from the grocery store, done the 9'er tek way in a blender. The mushroom was evidently a little old because it took almost a week for the inoculation to recover and get started. Full colonization of 1.5 pint jars took about 30 days. Only problem is now that I don't know what fruiting temps to use with this strain. There are quite a few commercial Shiitake strains for different temperatures. I'll figure it out eventually . I have some definate primordia going now. Shiitake omelettes soon .
