Psilocybe hispanica - Pins on agar (Updated 5-25-06) 1

Psilocybe hispanica on MEA. I had this plate sitting around for months at room temperature. I put it in an environmental chamber at 59-60F and 1 week later these well form pins emerged. I have noticed hyphal knots and tiny malformed pins emerge from this species on agar before, but these are larger and look better. Sorry about the poor quality of the image. Condensation and the lid interfer with the photography. Once they are more mature I'll risk removing the cover for a better image.
For those interested in what species pin on agar, here is Psilocybe samuiensis pinning at room temperature.

i have some very nice pancyan fruits growing off agar, ones about 2inchs tall, do you think this would be a good fruiting strain to clone?

Possibly. Fruiting on agar is considered a postive event. But you can't know how well it will fruit until it is tested on the bulk substrate you plan to use. It does tell you that the culture is able to fruit and that it will fruit under less than ideal conditions. Assuming there is no hidden stimulating contaminate on the agar plate, the strain can also fruit on completely sterile substrates.

thanks ill compare the isolate from the fruit to a multispore inoculated grain jar, then side by side comparison in some oven bags of poo...

Hey man, where did you get that hispanica strain? You know, I?m from Spain and have been talking with some people that live by the "Pirineos" and always go hunting semilanceata and such. They told me that all they find is the old time semilanceata or at least they can?t make any difference between one and the other. I?ve talked to a presumed spanish psilocybe expert too and says he just found hispanica once and never again. I?ve searched some spanish mushroom hunting guides up to date and none mention Psilocybe hispanica. Do you know if it grows profusely or is it a rare specie?
Very nice work by the way. You should write a book or something, I?ll buy it for sure

I was able to get prints several years ago from the original collector that discovered it. He used to post here occasionally under the name of Nacho (pretty sure thats right). I am not certain how common it is, but from the wild photos I saw, it grew in fairly large groupings in the same areas as P. semilanceata. It is one of the easier temperate species to cultivate outdoors on dung or compost but it is tiny. It does look similar to semilanceata so I would guess it is collected more often than is known.

Condensation cleared up for a fairly good image through the lid. Not clearly visible in this image is a faint blue line at the cap stem interface. This mushroom will be transfered to new plate for further testing.

After multiple isolations I finally have a decent strain of Psilocybe hispanica that fruits reliably indoors. Substrate is horse manure cased with peat/calcium carbonate. Fruiting temperature is 55F. Pins visible in 14 days after casing. Tray pictured was cased 3/2/06.

What a relationship!
You guys love each other.
Beautiful stuff... when did you first germinate spores, ie. How long from the beginnings to the success you're seeing now?
peace, WM, you da man

Spores to agar germinates in 4-10 days.
Agar wedge to quart of sterilized horse manure colonized in about 14 days at 80F (in the past I colonized this species at 75F but growth tests indicated that 80F was closer to ideal).
Cased after complete colonization and place in enviromental chamber at 55F, primordia in 14 days after casing.
Picture is 22 days after casing. At this stage, Growth could be increased by raising the temperature to 60F, but for now I am going to leaving the temperature alone. ---------------------------------------------------
It is difficult to say how long it took to get to this stage from the time I first acquired the spores, since I didn't work nonstop on this species. I think I got the spores in '99 or '00 and maybe put 2 unconsecutive years into squeezing out an indoor fruiting strain. But thats a real rough guess.

Ahhhh. Of course your response is perfect and informative.
But i was referring to how long it has been since you obtained the spores originally and how long it has taken you to isolate the current strain that enjoys the indoors so much. Judging from the threads linked in this thread, it has been some years in the making....
I'm envious.
