tyvek polyfill filter
    #9037391 -

would a filter consisting of 2 layers of tyvek with a 1/4 in of polly fill in between, be reliable, would it keep in moisture and allow gas exchange.......or  tyvek under the lid and some polyfill under the holes in the lid where i inoculate but above the tyvek

Sounds like too much effort - I would go with either the tyvek or the polyfil, not both.

I put a layer of tyvec above and below the jar lid (assuming jars). Since the lid has a slight dip in it, the two layers never touch, so if one got wet it probably would never leach to the other. I do this with anything I need to agitate like LCs and grain. The bottom layer probably gets all kinds of wet from shaking and rh in the jar, but the top layer stays dry. So the top layer never leached contam and stops anything from getting to the second layer.

I put two 1/4 inch holes in the lid (single hole punch), coat one top and bottom with silicone, then apply filter 1, lid, filter 2 then seal. PC, noc through silicone and so far I'm 0% contam with my LC and grain over the last good little while...

1) You can get post office tyvek for free by ordering tyvek envelopes online - but that's a felony. You can also buy a set of tyvek overalls from the painting department at Lowes and cut them into squares. Two layers of post office tyvek or one layer of painting tyvek should be sufficient for gas exchange.

2) It's from "Farewell Ride" by Beck.

Either use one layer of Tyvek, or one Polyfill filled hole.  Either way will provide enough protection against conams, and gas exchange.  If you do too much, you will not have the gas exchange necessary for the myc growth.

Supposedly, it's a felony to cut them up... but I wouldn't worry about being charged.

Sounds like you need to do a search on Tyvek and polyfill teks.  The best way to find good answers is to read old posts.

If you don't have the self-healing noc ports, then contam can go through. The silicone sticks to the tyvec above and below and does not let anything through but your needle, so for PFTek you'd need to make 2 - 4 self healing holes for inoculation and at least one more for gas exchange. Just make sure the silicone sticks to the top tyvec or contam can slip through. It would work, but it's a lot more effort than the verm layer imo. For PFTek, one tyvec layer on top should be sufficient, again if it's sealed by the silicone noc ports.

Yeah - that's a lot of work for PF jars...

For grains, I do 2 holes - one silicone port and one for GE. Top and bottom tyvec filters and no worries.

good luck - feel free to ping me with questions. I'm far from the best, but I know enough to be dangerous :crazy2:

1/4" is plenty for ge ime. make a couple if you want to be sure. single hole punch works great - clean holes, not dents.
