polyfill filter alternatives

Hello, yesterday I inoculated my jars with rye all the process was quite clean (sprayed half a bottle of lysol) and all but there was one mistake I did... I know its stupid so please dont post anything relating to that (besides the only site I know that details grain inoculation is fungifun which in that time was unfortunately not working)... well I get to the point: I forgot to make the polyfill filter for the lid so now I have 5 jars (room temperature a little cool but no so much please note this also) with the lid tighly closed wit hfour holes and an tin foil wrapping. During the early steps of mycelium colonization its not a problem but then when gas exchange becomes a problem Ill have to (A) change the lids and put cotton on the holes or I could (B) put the jars in a tupperware previously sprayed with lysol and alcohol and loosen the lids and close it up... Is the alternative B viable enough or should I go for A or something else? Thanks in advance...

Use either the polyfill or get some Tyvek. You can get free samples from the USPS, do a search on it. Maybe alternative B would work, but normally the jars are incubated in a sterile tupperware and have a filter. You should try to watch it with the Lysol, there was a post a while ago about someone burning their lungs from overuse.

Thanks for replying... for alternative A I'll have to open up the jars to put the cotton, I was thinking that maybe could prepare previously the cotton, sterilize it in some way (how can I?) and put it fast in the 4 holes... A glovebox would be perfect but I have no more money so Ill just have to sterilize the nvironment in some way... Is this too risky?

Try whatever you can... but it looks like you may have to try again.

If you already have holes in the lids, you can get some polyfill and put it in as quickly as possible after removing the tinfoil. Or, you could use tyvek and a rubberband. I don't think you'll have to open the jars, and you could still get good results.

Ok so I make cotton (isnt it the same that polyester floss or should I ask for the second?) filters and put them carefully on the holes, in total 20 little filters... How do I sterilize thisfilters so I wont add any contam risk to the already existent threats? How can I put it and does the environment need to be as clean as when sterilizing? Thanks in advance

I would just treat them like pf jars man.they may take longer this way, actually they will take longer and arent going to grow perfect, but if you start messing with things you are just asking for contams.take off the tape and put some tyvek filters over the holes.

Can I trust your expertise? have you ever done rye jars and know that grains requiere more air exchange than PF materials, will it really take longer? To the other people out there, what is your opinion?

no im an idiot, dont trust me ive never done rye,i only use homegrown sunflower seeds.Take the lids off and stick some dirty cotton in the holes.make sure you use a dirty spoon and dig around in the grain while your at it.I do that with my seeds, its fun. I didnt say it was ideal, but you dont seem like your crayon box is full,so i was trying to help you not fuck up your jars by taking the lids off.Do it whatever way you think is best.Good Luck

ButterNut: I never intended to open the jars and put the polyfill just put it on top and make it the best I can (had hopes it could work juste needed to knoif and how can it be sterilized with just Lysol or something)... I make these questions because I dont live in the US so things arent available too quickly like Tyvek and that stuff. I know the dangers of contamination and just felt like asking...
