Just dropped $270 on two tests...

I just spent $270 on two GRE tests this fall.  The first one is in about a month.  It will be the most important test of my life, god Im so nervous.

Anybody else taking the GREs this semester?

Oh yea, I should have mentioned that :grin:

They stand for "Graduate Record Exam", they are basically tests you take before going to graduate school.  The applications committee look at the scores of the applicants as part of their criteria for entrance.

So I have to take one general one, and one specific for my subject.  The subject specific one is very hard, and very important.  :puke:

Some schools/programs don't weigh the GRE's that heavily (although I'm sure some do). For instance, a lot of science programs will take into account your experience since, after all, you'll basically be an indentured servant doing work, not taking tests.

Yea, I made a point to talk about how the GRE, GPA and letters/experience are weighted to some of the profs at my school.  Specifically, the profs who sat on the graduate committee.

Of course they all have varying opinions, which leads me to believe that its not the schools that weight the importance of the GRE, its the individual who is on the committee.  Regardless, through all their opnions the common theme was GRE is important, more so than grades and letters/experience.  The few I talked to said they stratify the applicants based on the GRE first, pick the top of them then look through the others for applications of note.

Im pretty much guaranteed to get accepted into my undergrad institution, but I really dont want to go there.  :tongue2:

I wouldn't worry.

I took the Geology GRE about year and a half ago and found it to be relatively easy and while it's not the same thing as you're taking, it is a "hard science" GRE and probably contains some similar elements to yours.  There was a ton of physics stuff on mine that really kicked my ass; As I've said before, I can't do math to save my soul.  Despise it.  So that was a bit of a struggle.  But if that type of thing isn't difficult, and I gather it isn't for you, then you shouldn't have a problem.

You probably have access to some study guides as well, which is a big plus.  I could never find one for the geology GRE, apparently almost nobody takes it.  I was trying to get into grad school w/out taking some required courses however, so it was required by our department chairman.

Interesting take on it.

I certainly would prefer a graduate student who could work and get my papers published, rather than someone who could take tests.

I didn't do particularly well on mine but had good grades, and plenty of experience which carried me through.

badchad:  Yea I lucked out and got a great research gig this semester.  I got the director of biological physics as my advisor, and he thinks there is a paper in what Im doing.  If he mentions that in my letter of recommendation, that would be very helpful.

madtown:  There is a geology GRE?  I had no idea.  I took a couple practice ones and didnt do so hot.  Its 100 questions in 3 hours, so less than 2mins per question.  And just about everything seems to be fair game from all sub fields.

The schools I would like to get in have US applicants in the 70-percentile range.  Realistically, Ill get in the 50-percentile range, so its gonna be a stretch.  I cant wait till this semester and application process is over.  :eek:

No I dont agree, but thats besides the point.  The money I spent here goes to a private testing corporation, not a university.

I guess I can understand that it is expensive to design and develop accurate standardized tests... but the shittie thing about it is the grad schools I apply to dont really care about the general GRE, they only care about the subject specific one.  Yet I have to pay for and take the general regardless, which on its own is $140.

All together, I estimate the application process will cost me between $1,000 - $1,300.  Yea.... I better get in somewhere....  :smirk:

Just wanted to poke your world view a bit with the glorious idea of free post secondary that many great Euopean nations have adopted.
To the benefit of all I should add.
A fair chance for all, based on effort and intelligence, not wealth. :thumbup:

Anywhoo, I really hope you get in as well. That's a hell of a lot of money to be paying.
And for the record I had no idea it was a private test.  Still, it should be free IMO.

There's always enough money if you cut the fat IMHO(greedy politicians, corporate welfare, and a bloated military)

About free college education... Im very much against it.  Its a basic fact that most people can't or won't go to college and get a degree.  Some are just not academically minded, others have certain life circumstances that just prevent it.  With that in mind, using tax payer dollars to provide those who are capable to get a degree and thus a higher standard of living and more opportunity in carrear seems very unfair.  Unfair to those who didnt get a degree, and have a more mundane job and less money.  Surly with all the benefits that a degree brings to an individual, that person should foot at least part of the bill.

And in fact, here in the US students only do foot part of the bill.  Even with no grants or scholarships, instate community college and state university is quite affordable.  It is very possible to afford it even with very low income, I did it with an entry level job... just takes a little longer cause you go part time here, or take a semester off there.

But the programs Im applying to this semester are paid for!  Not only that, I get a modest yearly salary just for going!  However, like mentioned above... I become an indentured servant.

I'll be taking the LSAT next summer...I'm nervous just thinking about it.

Best of luck to you man. I'm sure having a science background as you do will serve you well on a standardized test like the GRE. :thumbup:

Interestingly, almost all science related, advanced degrees (e.g. Ph.D's) are free, and you get a stipend to go to school.

That sucks

I had to go take that CLA test fucking saturday morning. Doesnt count for a grade and its just some requirement for the English department. Wrote 1 sentence responses to both of the prompts and walked out :smirk:
