chanterelles at the local grocery store
    #8940691 -

i bought some chanterelles at the grocery store the other day.  they were a light red-orange color and very tasty.  i paid only $4 for them and got a pretty good quantity.

it was my understanding that these had to be harvested in the wild and that they were VERY expensive.  which leads me to my question: are chanterelles being cultivated commercially?

I really doubt it.  Depending on where you live, chanterelles must be coming up like crazy.  It's definitely the season for them on the Gulf Coast--I've been finding smooth chanterelles in a neighbor's yard.  Unfortunately I've just found the one spot, and smooth chanterelles are pretty small... they make a tasty omelet though!

No one is cultivating them. It's an unusual find in a grocery. You should ask the grocer where they came from.

It's common for commercial mushroom pickers to totally rape a mountainside to harvest every last chanterelle for sale to grocery stores.  Boycott them and pick your own, leaving at least half in place to ensure their survival.

Isn't deforestation what caused the explosion in mushrooms in the PNW in the first place?

Sometimes the smaller local stores buy responsibly, just a few pounds at a time.  A supermarket chain wouldn't bother.

But... I went to two different areas that were completely raped of chanterelles this weekend. lots were pulled instead of cut, and the parings tossed around.  I have some resentment toward sellers right now.
