Taking advantage of Education
    #8947097 -

I'd say I'm a smart guy.  Through out elementary school I was separated from the rest of my class to do advanced learning.  Once I hit middle school I stopped trying to do my best on everything, I just didn't give a shit because I'd rather have fun and enjoy my time.  From middle school to my freshman year of college, I hardly did any work.  I got good to great test scores even with my memory distorted because of marijuana.  I simply attempted to merely get by, just doing as little as possible to escape punishment from my parents and adults at school.

Now that I am a sophomore in college I realize the need to do well in school.  I want to be successful and the way I was living would not get me to the place I wanted to be.  I do all assigned work, short of 'excessive' reading assigned by a couple of my professors, and attempt to do it well.

However, I feel I am in a difficult situation.  I know that I am blessed with the chance for education at this level but I don't feel like I am fully taking advantage of it.  I am doing work to pass the class with good grades, not to really learn anything while most of my free time is spent attempting to learn and gain knowledge, usually through the computer.  I love learning but I can't really enjoy what I am being forced to learn for some reason.  I don't really learn much from my classes, just what is necessary to answer assigned questions or possible problems on tests.  I always find myself keeping my mind occupied with other things during class, mostly day dreaming about basketball, revenge , or getting laid.  What the fuck is the deal?

I'm done smoking weed for the time being, as it interferes with my awareness and memory too much.  Hopefully this is a step in the right direction...

If anyone has any comments, advice, anecdotes or anything to add at all, feel free

I don't disagree with the importance of acquired knowledge.  Obtaining information throughout the duration of your petty existence on this minuscule planet does serve a subjective purpose; to advance.
Now that the congenital anthropology of humans has dramatically changed, in contrast to our evolutionary time-line, in the past couple of centuries, the objective becomes a three course function- monetary stability, social stability and biological stability.
But I'll focus on the importance of monetary stability; as it does indirectly affect the balance of your other functions.

I never went to college, and I barely made it through High School, but if you understand the ideology behind the Scholastic Aptitude, it's merely a test to determine if you're smart enough already, to become successful post-formal education.
If you're smart enough to surpass the articulated obstructions, and have no particular field of interest that requires a degree, and you're looking to fortify your economic, or 'monetary stability'... you should seriously consider investments; mutual funds, stock market, real estate.
Intelligence is the ability to solve problems, absorb knowledge and make valid interpretations.
Logic is problem solving that applies efficiency to certain tasks.
Mathematically, it's finding the shortest distance between you and your objectives.

My favorite forbes fact

"Put $160,000--the approximate cost of a Harvard education--into municipal bonds that pay a conservative 5%, and you'll have saved more than $500,000 in 30 years. That's far more than the average college grad will accumulate in the same amount of time."

Take a year or two off. Get a crappy job that keeps you away from parties and computers and read some books-- old, hard books-- during your breaks and think about them to keep tedium at bay the rest of the time. You'll come back to college changed.

Yet the average college grad pays nowhere near 160,000.  For a sane university and community college you can get a four year degree for 20 to 30 grand.  The price of a nice, new car.

I'd rather have a nice car... but the car I'm looking to possibly finance soon is closer to 90 grand. The only thing that keeps me from buying it is the credit liability aspect, I own one property now, bought when I was 23, and I'm in discussion now to buy my Father's house (FSBO) when he moves into a new condo.  Lenders tend to act a little hesitant to give you a $350,000 mortgage loan when you have high-end liabilities like luxury vehicles plus an additional 250k home loan.  It's all odd how it works really, because in one situation it can be considered a GOOD asset, in others they're horrible liabilities.
I have 40grand in stock now, I just hope they don't plummet like Leham brothers.
If I knew Bank of America was going to start buying the fuck out of everything, I would have bought some shares of their stock a while ago.

The deal is you haven't found a thing to study that fascinates you yet.

I screwed around pretty much my entire education, all through grade school. I don't even know how I got my diploma after only four years of high school in the first place considering how many F's I got. Then I went to junior college and continued the grand tradition of general slacker-fuckupery, dropped out, worked for half a year, and got fired for being late a couple times. Now I feel like shit and I hate my life.

I'm going back to junior college next semester. Unlike my first shot, this time I have a specific goal - I'm going to study journalism so I can work for a paper, website, or magazine as a reporter. That's what I've always been good at and should be applying myself to, however distracted I was for that first couple years in junior college (by anthropology, psychology, drugs, women, crossdressing, the whole fucking lot). Hopefully I can transfer to Berkeley or SF State eventually.

doing well in school like anything else you do is a behavior. you need to practice doing this, just like say someone who spends hours on end to get better at guitar hero ;p.. eventually trying hard and studying at a level that keeps you at the top of your class and thus at a position to go onto greater educational pursuits will become your primary behavior in that endeavor. you are right in that you in a wonderful position to take advantage of the education that is available.

work hard at trying to study hard, it will become easier.

My best study tips:

Have a flash drive.

Get all the learning materials you can from your professor, and put them onto that flash drive.

Use Flash Cards!!! especially before exams, and ESPECIALLY before midterms and finals.

Read... if nothing else read the summary of the chapters, and study in your books the main points that your professors emphasize in class

You want a 3.5 GPA if not better for Ph.D and Masters programs

You want 3 strong letters of recommendation, so start volunteering and interning in the area of your academic interest, even if for free, its worth it considering what youll get in the long run

Be social with your professors, stay after class and talk with them, about the materials, or your plans for the future in your education

Plan ahead of time, like 2 semesters before for programs you wish to join, i.e., masters, certificate, Ph.D. etc... get your application dates right, make sure you start studying ahead of time for the GRE

pretty much make studying and school your priority, before weed, gf's, hanging out with friends.. all that should come second. get your mind oriented to focusing on SCHOOL. Embrace it, love it. then you will enjoy it.

I think an important aspect of college is learning and studying subjects you may not otherwise have, and doing work that may not necessarily be interesting to you.

Inevitably you'll be faced with this type of sitaution more tha once in your life:  You'll have to do something you don't want to do, or learn something new, and you probably won't want to do it.

Education has been the single most important thing in my life.  It's offered me opportunities and opened doors I couldn't have imagined.

...the whole experience is (and is as) a profound piece of knowledge.  It is an indellible experience; it is forever known.  I have known myself in a way I doubt I would have ever occurred except as it did.

Smith, P.  Bull. Menninger Clinic (1959) 23:20-27; p. 27.

...most subjects find the experience valuable, some find it frightening, and many say that is it uniquely lovely.
