my question is would anyone recommend that I purchase agar poured and jelled in the petri dish rather than buy the supplies and do this myself. And is it much more expensive that way?
Thanks

Do you recommend buying agar from Mycosupply, they claim that their stuff is superior to store bought.

Much cheaper to make your own , not hard at all either , just time consuming . Homestead sells a pre mixed pack you just add water and sterilize , then pour in dishes . But in "THE BOOK" there are several recipies for making your own brew , check it out . Good luck . May the mushroom godess bless all your endeavors !

I really can't tell you what Vendor to buy from.
Since I am a Vendor forum mod....that might seem biased.
I can only say.....please shop around with our Supporting Vendors.
You might be able to pick up the supplies for making PDA or PDYA....locally. I just made up some PDYA from scratch last night. It was easy to make.
good luck!

Hey Ripple,
I'm not familiar with any suppliers that sell pre-poured agar plates.
Agar is fun to play with though, and rewarding too..
Sporeworks has a nice selection, you may be able to find it cheaper through someone else but that is who i would recommend. Also, if you want to cut the costs, don't buy any agar plates and just re-use half pint jars, or actually the other day my lab technicians got a dozen of these cute little quarter pint jelly jars that will probably work even better! Also, when working with these jars, you can pour the agar mix into each jar before pressure cooking, instead of pouring the hot agar into the little petri dishes.
Good luck, Keep on shroomin, GG

There are plenty of places on the web where you can get lab supplies cheap. I recommend making your own agar at home if you want to save money. Here's a cheap source for petri dishes:Peace
