Re: Amanita Muscaria var Formosa Identification Request [Re: Pauvro]

Me too, Pauvo.  There's a site that lists the current names for nearly all mushrooms and they are rarely wrong.

http://www.indexfungorum.org/Names/Names.asp

However, in this case they are.  I go by the name Dr. Tulloss gives.

I should check my patch.  I didn't think of it until now.  When they are booming I can pick 50 pounds.  One year I came out with over a laundry basket full.  I dried them on a bed in the spare bedroom with a box fan.  It took three days.

Congrats on the great find!  Woo hoo

Wow!  Yeah, that's the great thing about finding these is that now we know where we can go to find more :-).

50 pounds is impressive! :-)

Well, to be fair it was a one time thing.  I was trying to sell them.  After that I never picked that many again.  I'll still check the patch though.  It might be too late here.  Most of the Amanitas have gone to bed for the season.

I was going to mention the fact that i thought they were incorrectly called var. Formosa - they're the ones i find.

As for taking them, dry them out, put them in the oven at a low heat (GM 2 or 3) and baste them in their juices for a few hours before eating them - it converts a lot of the harmful ibotenic acid so you feel less twitchy.

enjoy the trip  :peace:
