Gymnopilus spectabilis [Big Laughing Gym] ????

I live in Ohio and know you can find Gymnopilus spectabilis from reading these forums.. I've looked at a ton of pics, but just wondering, does this strain bruise blue? if not what is a sure fire way to identify them? And is there any other strain of goodies around here?

Hi djneutron,

The Big Laughing Gym mushroom
Has consistantly given mycological researchers conflicting conclusions as to their potency.
Some areas of the world Gym. spec. is analyzed and reported to be not-active,
Other areas of the world Gym. spec. has been tested to be active in psilocybin content.
Strangely, the potency and activity of this mushroom has variable results.

I do not believe that spectabilis stains blue,
-Though some here at the Shroomery have said otherwise.. :crazy:

And their spore deposits (just like the many other Gymnopilus species) are a Rusty Orange.
I wouldn't eat those if i was you  :grin:

Alexander H. Smith doesn't mention blueing in his book. He also says "some collections contain psilocybin and some, apparently, do not."

Gymnopilus Spectabilis turns green when you put it in the frying pan .....I know that is just one more fact that makes it easy to identify... :tongue:

last years gyms. see how they reach away from the stump,
caps are often very oval like oyster mushrooms, stipes often meet cap at accute angles.
very dirty mushroom, quite tough. take note of the magin.

I too am waiting for them to pop up here in Ottawa...nothing yet...except for reishi.

It is my experience that the spectabilus that I find do stain bluish greenish...but not usually heavy.

yamaha makes some tough acoustics.

currently i have a cheapo fender acoustic (6),
I get a lot of compliments on it,
Its pretty nice for paying under 200bucks for it.

before that i had a 12string Ovation that i played for maybe 10 years,
That thing was my baby, but it got busted in a car accident. :frown:

i dont know why they look brown, they look orange to me. covered with their own spores, picked in the rain and brought home in 3 garbage bags.
note how on some of the younger ones you can see some cap where there is no spore and there is a slight greenish tint too
all dried out they were a dull rusty orange, print was orange, hell they turned my fingers all orange when i picked them.
my friend ate half the lot in one sitting when he showed up late to get some cubes at the party. he went to tim hortons after washing them down with 8 beers and rolled around sreaming roaring laughter that it was 4am and they diddnt have many fresh donuts. kept shouting "THERES ONLY TWOOOOOO! TWOOO TWOOOO HAHAHAHA!
sorry lady i dont meat to laugh in your fucking face HAHAHAHA TWOOO DONUTS! I WANT DOGHNUTS WITH NO NUTS!!!!!! WA HA HA HA!
and he told us this story over and over and over all night till it wasnt funny anymore laughing the whole time like it had just happened because he was re-living it over and over and over.
so yah, they are very psychoactive in quantity.
ive had a 1/4 oz and it made me slighty odd, but not really trippy. id say he ate 2 oz or maybe a bit more.
he was off his rocker, but ive been higher from a half oz of dried libs, but thats a whole other universe.
it takes alot... more than i want to eat for the desired effect.

I am interested in these mushrooms as well, so please give as much detail as you can about the environment you found them in, particularily the type of tree or whatever. I want to find them and transplant them into my garden. I am interested in the mildness as I want to use them for medicinal for my migraines. I only need to laugh a little bit.

I just thought I'd drop in and mention that anybody hunting Gymnopilus should familiarize themselves with Omphalotus illudens (hell, any of the Omphalotus) so that you don't collect them accidentally. They are similar enough that I could see somebody mistaking one for the other, and Omphalotus are pretty nasty poisonous. In 2000, according to NAMA stats, Omphalotus beat out Chlorophyllum as the mushroom causing the most poisonings.

Dnt know much about gyms just recently found my first lot but as far as i can tell there not very active and the larger more yellow are even less active. with  no apparent bluing.but the amount you have to ingest for any effect.is extremely larg so cultivation would seem kinda pointless to me im just saying not an expert but i im wrong please inform me seriously i crave info was just giving a opinion
