Anybody ever find these? They are listed in the National Audubon Mushroom guide as hallucinogenic and found on wood throughout North America.
They look worth finding according to this book, but I haven't ever heard of anyone finding them.

They are popular in Japan. The north american variety is not as potent. Or so I've heard....

Yeah, I find Laughing Gyms every fall, they should be popping up just about now. They only seem to grow on rotted logs, mostly Oak, as far as I can tell. They are the only halucinogenic shroom that grows in my state ('cept for Amanitas), but they don't contain Psilocibin or Psilocin, so they don't blue. I don't think anyone has isolated the active ingredient, but don't quote me on that. They are one of the prettiest mushrooms I've ever seen, because they are this brilliant shade of electric orange. They make you happy, and giddy, and feel kind of drunk, but they are not trippy in the same sense as Psilo. mushies, at least not the ones that grow around here (South East Penn.) If anyone is interested in obtaining some of these, PM me and we can work something out if and when I find some this season. They contain no known active ingredients, and aren't controlled in any state, so mailing them is no problem.
I did acid once, white boy gave it to me. He said "you gonna be trippin", I said Shit, I ain't goin' nowhere without my luggage.

they do contail psilocybin, it is their active chemical. aminitas dont contain it tho. and some active gymnopilus show bluing.
and since they DO contain a controlled substance id be real careful about offering to mail them if i were you.

For real!
Be careful about sending thes out.
Aside from the four common psychoactive chemicals, I believe they contain something called norargonine? Can't remember. It was some kind of chemical unique to the Gymnopilus family.
Anyway, if you find them every fall, awesome! I've yet to find one. Although, last year I found what I thought to be Gymnopilus leutiofolius. I'm not sure, though. May have been some kind of Pholiota.
Stay cool!-Levi7.

I'd like to see where you got your info on the chemical make-up of Gyms. I know I've read in several mushroom guides that Gyms don't contain psilocibin, and they certainly don't blue, and their effects are nothing like regular shrooms. Perhaps the Japaneese variety contain active chemicals that their North American counterparts don't. If they do contain Psilo., then please let me know, cause then I'll pay more attention to them in the future.

John allen told me so. :) i beleive him. ive also read about the psilocybing content in gymnopilus spectabilus in many references and at least one study. but theres no way im able to find these examples. when mushroom john gets back you can ask him for examples, hes got HEAPS of documents and journals. ive never seen him at a loss for information references. you could call him bibliography john too :)
and G spectabilus is a fairly common and well-known speceis. tho a bit ignored among psilocybe pickers due to its foul taste and weak content.
