 Ohio Big Laughing Gyms HELP!!!!

I live in Ohio and at work today noticed some rather large orange mushrooms growing off the root of a tree. Orange sporeprint orange stem caps are huge umbrella like and orange slight brown in spots couple of stems had slight blue brouising some had a green mold look on it wondering what to look for..if perhaps poisonous. I'm almost 100% positive they are gyms but i was wondering if theres any obvious signs. Also when i took them home they were filled with a larva maggot type bug so i didnt dry them i tossed them. For future reference if i boiled them and drank what i strained throug ha filter would that work. sorry if this is a sloppy post i cant be precise my comp freezes fast gtg please any suggestions...oh ya and the mushrooms reeked like something awful

G. sectabilis do not show blueing. a few gyms do exhibit bueish green bruising. they will not bruise upon handling but wil be bruised in aread where they grow up against something, or the stipes diverge from one another when ceaespitose in habbit.

It's best to buy a field guide and check all the charactoristics. Yes; there are poisonous look alikes, but these are easy to identify if you know what you are looking for. Fungus gnat larva is common in the gyms I find in the summer, but the mushrooms are usually maggot-free in the fall. If your collection smells awful then they are probably not spectabilis. Big laughing gyms smell good, sorta like allspice. I don't know what the other active species smell like. You can buy a mushroom feild guide for about $20 at almost any mall book store. I hope you find some.

With all due respect I must humbly disagree.
I have a field guide called "Psilocybian Mushroom of the World" or something like that which has a photo of a Spectabilis specimen with distinct blue at the base of the stem. The book is in a box in my dorm room which is locked for the summer. i think I got the name wrong. Anyway, many of the immature little yellow ones I find growing next to the big orange caps show blueish green bruising several hours after collection. This is not always the case however. Also one specimen I found last year bruised immediately light bluish green as soon as I picked it. Now there is the possibility that I could be full of shit or remembering incorrectly, but I don't think so.
Is it possible that I have been finding some other species of Gym?
I will make it my mission this season to find a bluing one and post the photo.
Until then I am once again mystified by the complexities of the mushroom kingdom.

Gymnopilus spectabilis grows most commonly in clusters around trees and stumps. Occasionally on burried wood. Prefers hardwoods in eastern North America and conifers in the western part of the US.

Look on half rotten logs in low lying moist areas, along river banks, and on hillsides overlooking lakes. That's where I find mine.

I find most of mine on buried roots
of hardwoods. Oak and Maple,,usually
later in the season late sept. oct. nov.
I'm in southern New England..You can smell em..
I found a few G. penetrans this week, but left them be..

I've seen a lot of picture of Gyms on woodchips, but I found my first Gyms growing from fallen Birch trees on a floodplain.

The books I have say "anise smell", but I think they have a smell all there own. It could be described as fruity/spicy, they remind me of the way spice jelly beans smell. Hope this helps.

If your talking about the black jelly beans, that would be anise smell  Anise smell=licorice smell.
