big laughing gyms...

the big laughing gym seems to be rather overlooked due to its horrible(at best) taste and its habitat. the taste is similar to bitter-rusty water, i marvel at people who disdain the regular psilocybe taste... anyhow the laughing gym is a real, working magic mushroom. yes folks it does contain one of the psillies. the other reason it is much overlooked is because you have to usually walk around for awhile in the woods during the fall. you'll have to look in on it for yourself though just like i did, and for folks living up in the northeast, it kinda balances out those who live in the south or the pacific northwest, or norway, ireland, and europe. i am a fan of the big laughing gym. heres the best way to identify it. in the poconos it comes up mid-september thru mid-october in numbers, after the jacks. they seem to space themselves at good distances. like their name they are big, i'd say the biggest and hardiest of the fall mushrooms like pholitas. they smell of fruits, tastes like bitter lemon rind rolled in rust. gills are rusty(go figure), attatched, stalk is woody, fibrous, firm. sometimes a ring. grows in sometimes large clusters on fallen trees, stumps, logs, dying trees, and buried roots of all of the above. they have no scales on cap surface, margin is incurved til late maturity. stains brown when bruised or cut, sometimes blue-green at base. once you see them, you can't miss them again. have fun and happy hunting. just a pointer. dry 'em, powder 'em, shot 'em in a shot glass, and chase it with juice. they really taste ridiculously horrible, but if you can stomach that, its worth the trip. peace.

I found about 8 or 9 ounces dry last year.. I enjoyed them.. Then gave the rest to a friend... He shared with 5 others... They loved them and can't wait till I get more this fall... The taste is tough to get by... As you stated once you find them you can't miss them I can even smell them... It's that distict... I always associated thier smell with fall.. Just thought it was leaves or] something similar.. Now I know when I smell them to start looking... I've had better luck finding them on root systems as opposed to actual visible decaying wood... Also not on pine..... Thanks for reminding us all.... Nofindum....

They love the hardwood stumps here- bout busted a nut several times last year walking in the acerage near my home finding HUGE clumps of pholitias and running over like a madman only to find out the bitter truth. Found three clusters though and got several ounces. It's one of the only things that grows around here and it gets you through the winter fine when you can't buy cubes or find subbs. Biggest one I found was in the front "yard" of a beautiful old babtist church- giant cluster on a stump cut to the ground- spotted it when I got off 74 and about hit a Jeep. And the best way to do them is to make tea if you ask me. Powdered gyms are like eating powdered shitcake (I imagine that to be the taste of shitcake...). A red zinger will do it with honey. Also alcoholic slushies with OJ and lots of ice with powdered gyms is unimaginably helpful. Hope everyone finds a shitload this year- wish they were out now cause nothing else is- just went hunting today and found conocybes, amanitas, pans (inactive- by th hundreds), coprinicus, milkys, one chantrelle(wtf?) and got chased by hornets- none of this happens in the fall hunting gyms.
