 Pennsylvania Shroom Finds- Laughing Gym and ?

These were found on a rotting fallen over tree right in the middle of the woods where there wasn't too much light, just enough for surrounding vegitation to grow. It was also about a month ago in the North East of the US. I first took pictures when I brought them home wrapped up in a leaf, then I took spore prints. Too bad though, the mushy heads were infested with maggots! I believe a fly larvi of some sort. So I threw out the prints as they were nasty, covered with goo, rotting mushroom flesh, and maggots of some sort. But I do have pictures, so if anyone could identify these, that'd be fantastic. I don't have the slightest clue on what these are, have never seen them before. I don't think the NE gets too many psilocybins growing naturally, correct me if I am wrong.

Gyms are a fall mushrooms. I would bet that you didn't find them, though I might be wrong. Post more information here so we can determine whether or not you consumed a poinsonous mushroom. What color were the spores? What did the veil look like. What was the taste like?

Yep they were Big Laughing Gyms (not the ones in the first post):
I found the Gyms in the Summer (picture not of the gyms I ate, for identity purposes only), around the same time as the aforementioned and unidentified species as above. In the shade these gyms were found on a rotting stump. They tasted earthy, not bad at all, aslo they were dried out. I fealt nothing but relaxation, but maybe that was my expectation of the experiance? I wasn't let dont after not having a trip, for I knew these were naturally unpotent mushrooms. I have no doubt what I ate there Gyms, what I really want to know is the species above. Also this summer I found what looked just like the mushrooms in the first post, growing out in the middle of my lawn garden in the blazing hot sun! I'm not sure if they were the same species, but they looked very similar. I have only three spore prints of the secondly found mushrooms. Maybe if I get a microscope/ camera I can show you all spore picture. Does anyone use microscopes to check out their spores here? Please someone identify these, I have had much trouble doing so.

Well as sure as you are gyms are very bitter and are very unpleasant as far as taste, not an earthy taste as you described.Also thay are a fall mushroom and typically arent found this soon in the season so it doesnt really sound at all like you found gyms... Not that I can see any pics but what really makes you think they were? Not that you really gave a description of the specific mushroom or anything.

I can't believe you'd do something as ignorant as eat an unidentified mushroom. You just assume gyms based on pictures? Very "unprofessional" for lack of a better word. Gyms are a very difficult species to ID even for experts. Theres tons of orange mushrooms with viels growing on dead trees.

I defiantly wont do that again, but to tell you the truth I was so positive that they were gyms. Next time I will identify them on here and get more opinions than my own. Thanks for bashing me, I needed it.

Bluing could help you a lot in your identification process.
Sporeprints are also a good idea to learn how to do. I highly recommend the excellent and accessible cornucopia of mushroom knowledge, "Mushrooms Demystified" By David Aurora.
Are you aware of the excellent mycological gatherings in your area? Google is your friend!!!
It is not impossible for Pennsylvania to exhibit signs of fall in late July, especially if you are in the mountains.
Lastly, did you trip? If you had a decent psilicybe( which I consider distinct, but I don't drink, so I've very sensitive to psychedelics) buzz, then congradulations!!!

though rough, i would not consider what vandango said to be bashing, or flaming. if he had been sure enough about his id, his post would not have said some of the things it did.
the fact is that eating an unidentified mushroom can *KILL* you in a verry unpleasant manner and at the least, could make for a verry unpleasant experience involving an intimate and prtracted relationship with the toilet. "shitting out your internal organs" is not a concern with mushroom poisoning but liver failure is.
primatephreak: where the suspected Gymnopilus mushrooms printed? what features of the mushrooms where used to determine the identity?
i don't mean to imply that you do not know what you are doing, but what you have said leads me to believe you did not.
as for the other mushrooms: there aren't any pictures. if you can get the pictures up it will help, but you will still have to post a physical description (read the mushroom hunting forum rules and description guidelines for details on giving a description) before you can have an id. you are required to do ths before posting an id request.

Sorry to tell you bud, but you didn't eat Gyms. I just recently ate my first Gyms. Big Laughing Gyms, as a matter of fact. They were the most putrid bitter tasting asshole of a mushroom I've ever consumed. Absolutely rancid. I also found them last October. Gymnopilus spectabilis only grows in mid to late fall. I ate 13.5 grams of Gyms and experienced a level 2 trip... but I also got horrible cramps on my inner knees. Not one of my favorite trips.
Anyway, as others have said, before you eat any mushroom, spore print it, check brusing, and get a good ID on it here. You're lucky you didn't pick Jack-O-Lantern mushrooms (look similar to Gyms) and eat those, that'd be a pretty fierce poisioning.

Hey taste is very subjetive. My girfriend thinks red bell peppers are too hot and I refuse to eat raddichio because it's too bitter.
I would recommend drying Gyms, then making tea. THat is the best way to avoid these ridculous symptoms you guys are having. I mean that it really sucks that mushrooms make you sick. But htink about how cultures before ours ingested mushrooms, why they didn't get sick... or didn't mind getting sick, had a real constiution for it.
