GT let-down
    #8900911 -

I know I should have posted under the strain sticky, but I read like 1 1/2 of the 40 pages and wanted to shoot my self... So F that... I always hear, "Good-awesome" feedback from the golden teacher strain, But I dont feel that its all that great. Is it just the strain I got from my suppler ? I got B+ and GT, and the B+ are like... DOMINATING the GT is overall progression. I mean, this is my first grow, and Im sure there is this super GT strain out there that has been cloned, but all efforts and natural strain added up, is it worth it ? I see allot of people doing multi strain grows, and comparisons... and the GTs are always gimp (BY what Ive seen). Only thing I seen awesome from GT was someones outside grow, but Id say a natural, "Letting nature play its natural effect", added with proven aided enhancements, would only result in the best grow experience... Any comments, or turning my thoughts that I didnt pick a bad choice in strain ?

Um.. it's all a bit of a crap shoot. You just innoc'ed up what? BRF cakes with syringes? Grow out some GT 5, 10, 15 times & then compare. I don't think you can judge based on one grow.

Also, outside of vendor hype, a cube is a cube. They all grow pretty much the same.

What exactly were you expecting?

Well I compared the two strains I picked for my first grow... and the GTs are sucking in overall myc growth on cakes. both GT and  B+ produced the same way... but the GTs are FAR behind schedule. Perhaps I just got a gimp strain from the vendor <Shrug> I got GT cause the add explained that GTs are... (Copy paste, from the vendor below)

Very easy to grow with large yields and minimal aborts. Small to medium thickness with medium length fruit bodies. They grow in families of small to large clusters. Veil comes off easily from cap.

This strain is very fleshy, and not as hollow inside the stems as other strains.  Good for the yield and quality oriented grower.

They enjoy pretty much any substrate. Enjoys casings and takes over quickly, and does great in cakes.

A very popular strain that has made it through-out the world several times, and is well know for it's will to grow with minimal efforts. They are also very beautiful and picture perfect. They are fast colonizers. Very domesticated.
A must for a collector.

I liked the part where it said they were They are fast colonizers. Very domesticated, and very easy to grow with large yields and minimal aborts.

There progress just seems behind schedule to me, and like I said, I seen allot of other side by side compares that GTs looked to be the lesser of the comparing. Got me thinking that GTs suck or something, But if you say that all cubes pretty much grow the same, I'll take your word.

All strains aren't going to colonize the same anyhow.  Some will be faster than others.  What kind of time line are we talking here anyhow?  maybe your B+ are super fast and the GT is coming along as they should be.  A lot of factors come into play as well.  How many jars are we talking here, one each?  The density of the substrate can slow colonization considerably.  The amount of inoculate used etc.  Sound like you're getting worried about absolutely nothing at all.  Plans, for the most part, are a list of things that don't happen.  relax, sit back and let it do it's thing.

-It is easy to isolate a a potent isolate from PE if you are looking for potency. Only because it is a 'sub-cubensis'.

-AND I AM NOT BY ANY MEANS SAYING THAT PE IS MORE POTENT! A CUBE IS A CUBE, IT IS JUST EASIER TO ISOLATE A POTENT PE EASILY(DUE TO BEING A SUB-CUBE).

6 12oz jars of GT, and 6 12oz jars of B+. its been 3 weeks today that they have been in the jar, and some of the B+ are like... 98% colonized, but the GTs are like... 50%. they were all growing SLOW at first but I found out that it was a gas exchange issue. I replaced the metal disc part of the 2 piece lid, and replaced it with a breathable disk of equal size of thick/stiff felt. and then they TOOK OFF ! Now that I think about it... perhaps the B+ strain was just more Co2 tolerant then the GT strain that I got... <Shrug>

do your GT jars look dry?  is it the bottoms that are having troubles colonizing?  Were they colonizing faster at an earlier point or was it pretty slow throughout?

They only seemed to spark up myc directly where the innoc juice ran... and SLOWLY!!! creeper out, with myc that was very thin ( Could see the substrate through them easily) The innoc spoor/water ran all the way down the side and to the bottom, so there was myc at the bottom early on, just only where the solution was first introduced. Then like I said when I replaced it with a felt disc, they took-off... all the myc that was real delicate, beefed up thick, and obtained more ryso looks, and so on... The GT's just seemed to be behind schedule big time. but yes, they dominated the top portion of the jar faster then the bottom. with the felt I been bringing them out of there dark box, and letting a fan blow on the jars for like 1/2 an hr a day. Been speeding things up allot. The substrate is moistened just right id say... even lil bit on condensation between the glass and myc in some areas. I followed the RR vids, and mixed my verm and water first, but my substrate seemed to want to clump up a lil.. I didn't try to relieve some of these air pockets the clumps harbored, cause I didn't want to pack the substrate in there like the vids told me not to... Plus the myc seemed to like these air pickets... taking them over pretty fast. most every ones jars I see, are like... substrate RIGHT up against the glass real close...

Pics;

the B+ at the far end wasn't doing shit till I replaced the lids with the felt filters. I circled its myc growth in pink,... its small; started like 2-3 days ago. In a compare they don't look TOO far off,... but you don't really get the full effect unless you can hold them and spin them around and fully inspect really...

You can ignore what vendors say about strains, its just there to sell strains, there is no one cube strain that is faster colinising or more contam resistant. Your inoculating from multispore, so will have a wide array of ginetics. I have to laugh at the, fruits in clusters, again ginetics, you may get clusters of fruits, may get single fruits or both. Any strain can grow that way.

any how, id be looking at your substrate and gas exchange (which you have fixed) rather than strain. If your subsrate got compacted or the water content is off, this will effect colinisation.

For gas exchange the inoc holes left uncovered should be plenty. I vaguely remember the use of filter discs instead of the metal disc in the lid. Just make sure the filter stays dry.

My first grow was GT and they took almost a month to fully colonize. But after that, they were pretty sucessful in fruiting (now on my 5th flush).

Its nothing to do with the strain, when you inoculate with multispore you have thousands of spores at each inoculation point.

In a spore syringe there are millions of spores, each with there own unique genetics.

Slow colinisation is usually down to

inadequate gas exchange
Over wet substrate
Compacted Substrate
Contamination

I think if you used your spores to make an LC, then you wouldn't have slow colonization. Unless of course you have another problem going on. Making the LC may take a little more time in the beginning, but in my opinion it's well worth it.

Liquid Culture, is mycelium grown in a nuitricious liquid, usely water with honey or karo. I wouldnt recomend LC to people new to cultivation as its very difficult to spot a contaminated LC. Moulds dont sporolate in LC, and mould mycelium is white.
