atheists dont deny the existence of a god, they simply hold no belief towards its existence. its really hard to explain, but its a simple concept. i chose this label because it makes sence and it paints me as a "bad guy" to ignorant fucks and atracts logical, nice people.

and dont tell me im wrong. if you wanna know what an atheist is, ask an atheist, not a dictionary.

ps: many atheists do deny specific gods like yahweh or allah as impossible, as do i.

pps: 50% of americans <25yr are non-christians. yay

My point.


I don't know where you got that definition but that's not the philosophically accepted definition.  An atheist is exactly what it sounds like: a non-theist.  A baby who doesn't understand the concept of god is an atheist, as are Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens and others who outright deny a deity's existence.  It's not a religion because it's not a belief, it's the absence of a belief.

You are absolutely correct, but what you ignore is that based on observable evidence these are the correct assumptions. There is a relative mountain of evidence for linear time, the big bang, etc.. as compared with any other explaination. This is why science has adopted these theories.

Perhaps these are wrong, and most likely they are at least partially wrong. It is likely they will be replaced or refined with better explanations. They are, however, very useful. Religion can be useful for personal development, but is almost surely utterly useless (based on current evidence) when it comes to explaining external natural phenomena.

Also it is generally acceptable to say "I don't know" without attributing the supernatural. It is possible that this information will come at some later time.

I think its important to realize that any scientific theory or even religious explanation is simply a model. A series of words is not reality, but it simply attempts to explain as much as possible. When I look at what science is capable of (moral judgement of accomplishments is another thing), I see a lot of real concrete development possible in quality of life.

Futhermore, I feel that the personal development that is possible through religion is also possible through philosophy, psychology, and some other scientific disciplines(economics, etc).

This is why I am an atheist. I will just about never get in to a discussion about it though, because it ends up being two monkeys flinging poo at each other.

Maybe you're right bro. But, in all my life, an atheist is someone who believees there is no god. Always. It has never changed for me. If you say you're an atheist, then, to me, and most people I know, that means you don't believe in any god. Maybe philosophy says different, but, I hate philosophy, so it can go to hell along with most other religions. NOW. There are "religions" that are more like a way of life. Buddhism, satanism, wicken. IDK. I don't see those religions, although they technically are. You don't praise anything, not to my knowledge. (That doesn't say much, since I don't know much about any of them except satanism) They are simply ways of life. In satanism, you just live life to you own means. You can praise a god if you want, or you can deny it. Satanism has some great.... ness to it. If I were to EVER consider myself to be part of a religion, this would probably be it. The number one sin is stupidity. Comeon. Any "religion"/organization that puts their number one sin/rule as stupidity, can't be that bad. LOL.

Atheism != nontheism.

Anyways, I find it funny how many choose to remain agnostic about God, and yet would find it crazy to hold an "absence of a belief" as to whether invisible pink unicorns or the Tooth Fairy exists.  The array of evidence we have is not an exact 50/50 split between God's existence and God's nonexistence--by taking the refuge of agnosticism it seems you're merely hiding from the question itself.

Not at all; it just acknowledges the situation.  What I always say to people is that I actively believe that there is no god, yet I intellectually allow for the possibility that he might be out there, highly unlikely as it is.  Just like it's always possible that Santa Clause has been slipping through our radar all this time.  And I think most agnostics also "lack belief" in pink unicorns and the tooth fairy, only those issues don't seem to come up in conversation as much.
