Cake colonized, but no pins...help!

Ok, here?s my hangup....It?s my first attempt at growing, and I injected 7 jars with PF?s calssic strain.  It took a while for them to colonize (almost a month!), and only four had completed.  I birthed one cake into a terrarium, but it got contaminated, and I tossed it.  Then, I took the other three colonized cakes and crumbled them to do a small casing....that too bacame contaminated.  I concluded that the room I was operating in wasn?t sanitray, so I started doing it in a clean bathroom with lots of lysol (sterile as hell).  Now one more cake has fully colonized.  I put it into a smaller container, with perlite at the bottom, and let it sit.  It started growing white fuzziness....a sign that the humidity and temp could be too high.....so I took a friend?s advice and put a glass jar with ice in it in there, and exchanged it every two hours for 12 hours or so (maybe more).  I also have been exposing it to light the last 4 days, and I have been lightly misting with a diluted H2O2 solution to keep cobweb off.  Problem is, no pins :frown:  What am I doing wrong?

  • Quit spraying the cakes directly.

  • Fanning every 2 hours for 12 hours a day seems excessive. Try once or twice a day.

  • Be patient.

Yeah, I haven't been spraying them directly, just the walls of the terrarium. And I stopped fanning so much now that the ice has been removed....I would be patient, but I'm moving out in a week!!! Got to conceal this somehow in the next few days....hmmmm....

You might get lucky, see pins tonight, and be able to harvest by the time you move out, but I doubt it. It would be very tight at best.

ok, here's the other isse.....the container is pretty small and self contained....only enough room for one cake, and smaller mushrooms (not spore print size). That's all well and good, because if I'm in the middle of the fruiting cycle and I need to move, it's portable. Problem: I'm moving off to a college dorm, and don't know who my RM is yet, and so I'm not sure if he'll be cool with it (not a big concern right now). The bigger concern is that the parents are helping me move, so I was thinking I may need to stash it somehow.....but will it be a problem to hide somewhere where it might get a little warmer (IE storage chest)? It's only a two hour drive, so it won't be too hard on it I don't think....just wondering if I should take any special precautions. Thanks!

Keep it in an air conditioned part of the vehicle. It might get too hot in the trunk. Bringing that to a dorm room is risky, though. Be careful and don't tell anyone about it! If possible, hide it from your roommate!

Growing in the dorm, damn dude, you either got some brains or you don't want to stay in college too long. It's really not worth it cause nothing stays secret in the dorms. Here's my suggestion, forget that cake, bury it outside. Or better yet, depending on where the cake is in the fruiting cycle, dunk it for the ride. Just put it in a jar with water (distilled) and screw the lid on real tight, then when you get to the dorm find a nice shady spot and bury it, if you can find a shovel. But in reality it's gonna be real hard to do it in the dorm, and IMO not worth getting kicked out of school, which unless you are the luckiest S.O.B. on the planet, you will. Just spend your time reading different teks and forums to Learn, learn, learn. Then next year, when you move out of the dorms, you can start really grown good. Good luck.

See here's the thing....I was possibly planning on having a friend take care of it, because I might be coming back in two weeks, so he could just care for the cake and see it through its cycles.  If I had to take it to the dorm, I would probably store it in my closet...(the whole setup takes up very, very little room for just this one cake.  Since it only really needs light to start to fruiting, and only occasionally after that, I'd probably just stow it away deep in the closet for most of the day and keep it secret from my roommate.  Then once the cake went through all flushes (or I had enough shroomies stocked up) I'd bury the cake somewhere and wait until I moved into my own place to start again.....damn though, I have all the necessary materials for a large operation, and I have done LOTS of research (3 hours a day or so), and I'm all ready, but I have to wait!!  It sucks!!  I started this little test run just to see if it would work....started over a month and a half ago....didn't anticipate it would take this long.  I think you're both right though.....better safe than sorry...probably won't keep it in the dorm.  Though I may find a little hiding spot somewhere outside to stash it....and then visit it every day :smile:  We'll have to see....any advice on where I could store it?  In the container or out?  Bury it or make a small natural casing?  Who knows, maybe I could start to secret hidden mini-crop somewhere....doubt it would last the winter though.  Anyway, any ideas are welcome !

Bury it in a shady spot that receives no direct sunlight. If you can find a bush to stick it under, that might be good. Fortify the hole you dig with dung-based compost and straw if you can. Water every couple of days if it's not raining on a semi-regular basis.

It's Washington State....rain capital !!! Not too worried about humidity....more like too much (IE snow). But that's a ways off still....anyway, I know I'll be taking other stuff up with me anyway.....just not stuff I'll have to pay constant attention to. I think I'll probably bury it somewhere like you suggested......I won't be using mushies too much anyway while I'm there....only problem will just be storing them in my closet (along with other stuff).

Hmmm.....Washington State, well if your cake is a strain of Cubensis, which I assume it is, since you called this an "experiment", then I'm not sure how good your cake would do outside, may be a little to chilly up there, so your only options to try to keep it a secret and grow in your closet, but as stated above, this is not the brightest idea, Take it from someone who lived in the dorms not too long ago, shit I wouldn't even smoke da weed in the dorms, never would I think about growing in my closet. WAY, WAY to risky. Best advice, toss the cake, read more, and start when you have your own room out of the dorms. Stick to the good shit for freshman year: Booz and internet porn. hahaha

Booze and internet porn....where's the science?!!  Hey maybe I'll have a cool biology teacher with a back room..... :smile:  I'm thinking I'll just have my friend care for it....seems safest.  Would be a pity to waste such an effort

Even worse....I have Salvia, Mary Jane, and a box of goodies and accessories.....hoping I can store that stuff in the dorm....fits into a shoe box, and I doubt I'll use it much (not in the dorm anyway).  But the worst thing, I have a nice glass bong.....I don't want to part with it!! :frown:

Wait...good news!!  Now having never seen pins before (right as they are beginning to form), I can't say this is a sure thing....but after coming home from work, I've noticed small white "zit" like structures forming on the cake from the mycelium.....they aren't colored yet, but could these be pins?!! :smile:

See all the porn talk has made the shroom gods happy. Yes, they are most likely the starting of pins. Soon they will have a red "head" and that is the start of the cap. Just keep the humidity up, be sure not to mist the cake directly, and fan twice, three times a day if you can. My buddy gets mature fruit bodies anywhere from 5 to 8 days from the time the primordia starts to form. Right on man.

Kill the damn thing ...............you are going to one of the best places in U.S. to find and pick them in wild . Find an experienced finder and learn all you can from them . Trust me you will find them there . Hell this is the time of year for them too .
