Help! My cakes are pinning too soon!! [see pics]
    #1027525 - 11/06/02 11:21 AM (15 years, 1 month ago)

One of my cakes started pinning while it was only about 95% colonized! I think it's been getting too much light.

The cake is 26 days old and the only uncolonized area is the small patch visible on the bottom in the first picture.

I circled the pins so they're easier to see. This is my first time with mushrooms and I don't know what to do. Obviously I can't take the cake out until the rest of it is colonized. Should I keep giving it light, or leave it in total darkness until the cake is fully colonized? Any suggestions are welcome.

Put it in total darkness and allow it to finish colonizing. More light will only encourage further pinning.

What will happen to the already visible pins though?? Will they die or rot in total darkness?

They will continue to grow. Take a look at Hippie's Neglect Tek (invitro fruiting).

This happened to me a bunch. Just wait till the bottom is totally colonized (flipping the jar upside-down might speed it up) and then pop it out and let the mushies continue. It'll take close to a week before the mushies are ripe, and it'll take a while longer before they start to rot, so just stick it out.

Sometimes a spot that looks like it hasn't colonized is just a clump of verm that didn't get enough flour, i.e., it will never colonize.....

Just my experience.

Some of the tek faqs I've seen around recomend bringing the cake to pinning before birthing. Let it full colonize and the birth it, you'll probably be fine.

Thanks everyone. I'm gonna check on the jar in a couple of days and see how it's doing. I don't think there is a "clump of verm that didn't get enough flour" at the bottom. Upon close inspection I can see tiny specs of BRF. Also, the uncolonized spot has been slowly shrinking, that is why I let the jar get some light. I figured by the time pinning is initiated the small area on the bottom would be colonized. It just happens that pinning occured a lot faster and colonization a lot slower than i expected. Live and learn I suppose.

I think you should let it colonize the surface, then give it a few extra days to colonize the inside of the cake. Then you can induce pinning. Keep them out of light if you don't want pins.
