PF cakes (colonization)
    #1044248 -

what is the average amount of time that a pf cake takes to fully colonize? how do you recognize when it is fully colonized? and how long from birth to pins?

That depends on your strain!
But i'd say 17-30 days is a fair round about number for colonization of pf jars.
Also pinning is dependant on strains which strain are you useing or thinking about trying?

Hey... take it from me, I just ran into this problem.. when your cakes are fully colonized (took mine almost 2 1/2 weeks), let them go for another 5-7 days.. I thought mine were ready because they were all white, but they were just barely fully colonized (could plainly see most of the vermiculite)... now my growth in the terrarium is really slow.

so basically what I'm doing from now on is fully colonized + 1 week, then birth the cakes.

ya when it looks like the jar is ready to be birthed, wait a week. thats the rule i follow. to prove it even, ive grown a few cakes that were birthed when they looked ready and some more cakes that waited a week.
the normal birthed cakes on average yielded 3.6g dry per cake
the wait a week cakes yielded 5.3g dry on average.
thats about a 15% difference in yield.
however i only did this experiment once so maybe its not totally accurate.
i grow in pop bottles with perlite humidification and fan once a day.
