rye grain contam
    #862306 - 09/03/02 06:16 PM (21 years, 7 months ago)

About a month ago I innoculated 6 jars of rye grain... growth was pretty poor, the bottoms of the jars ended up very wet even though the jars were shaken well several times. Today I opened up all 6 jars, they all smelled like fermentation (not strongly), one smelled a bit like vinegar.
Any idea what contam this was? Tips on how to avoid it? All the jars were PC'ed for 1 hour. I'll post some pics soon.

Hey man,
Looks like they were simply just too wet. Did you do it as water ratios, or did you let the wheat absorb to its capacity then fill into jars and PC? What I have done in my few attempts at grain (but it has worked and I've heard from many others that it is the way to go) is boil (or simmer - not too hot, stirring regularly) the wheat / rye for about half an hour (or whenever the grains look like they have swollen a lot but have NOT popped / split yet) then, drain this through a seive, leaving to drain over a sink for about half an hour. This makes the wheat get to a good water content. Then, fill your jars and PC. If you do this, the water ratio is usually perfect and you should have great results
By the way, I see you are back obviously (and using the new digicam!) I sent away your letter today so it will be there soon.

Hahaha woohoo... the Warehouse, where everybody gets a bargain. I still resent paying $15 for a plastic bin when americans can get them for a few dollars. Actually most mushroom growing supplies seem to be like that, I must have spent hundreds so far. Anyway here?s all the grain I salvaged from those dodgy jars, I might case it in a day or so.

^^^^ You need to put a casing layer on that, or else you're gonna see green city!

Good luck

Oh right thanks.. I've never cased anything. But I've got sterilised coir, verm and oyster shell ready and waiting. It was my understanding that you had to wait a few days for "recovery" at incubation conditions before you case?

i dont think you need to wait to case, i mean it will grow thro all the stuff that is growable when it can right?? if you wait with it @ terrarium conditions wont it initiate pinning..

also

you are using coir verm and oyster shell
would it be possible to suitable use coir verm worm castings and would you really need the oyster shell then, or does the oyster shell help with calcium (i think)?

wish i could help ya out more

Here?s a pic of one of the casings

Done according to Ryche Hawke?s 50/50+ casing tek except I didnt use any hydrated lime... have to get me some of that. Oyster shell is to adjust the pH and make the mushies easier to remove.
So let me get this right..I should incubate the casings until some mycelium starts showing through? How much?

What i normally do is to break the colonized grain and apply the casing layer right after, then it's covered with aluminum foil with a few holes poked and let to rest for 5 days at incubation temps, then i place the casings in terrarium and mist the casing layer if needed, i normally see pins within 48 hours. I used to do it like you did but i had some green and decided to change, what i mean is ok to do it without the casing layer but i personally had bad results.

I think your casing layer is too moist btw, did you take the pic after misting ?

For interest, here is the same casing 4-5 days later (just birthed)

It originally came from some jars that were contaminated with a bacterial infection.

Sorry about the confusion.. there were 2 different casings I did at the same time (this is my first time casing). One of them came from several jars of Ecuador rye grain which may have been contaminated, or perhaps just wet. The other came from 2 Tasmanian pint jars of brf/verm. Anyway the tasmanian casing layer was colonising a lot better than the Ecuador so I posted a pic of that.
