You can actually grow Shiitakes on PF-Style Cakes, so you don't have to change your setup at all.

However Woodchips/Sawdust/Gypsum Filter Bags for indoors and Logs for outdoors are optimal.

As said, you can grow shiitake on brf cakes, but for an easy way to grow bulk, inoculate brf cakes with a shiitake culture, and when fully colonized, break up the cakes into sawdust-woodchip bags.  Here's how I prepare sawdust and woodchip bags.
