growing on a slightly larger scale
    #629529 -

I've been thinking about starting to grow oysters (and shiitake) on a commercial basis (to restaurants) and i've thinking of various methods of expanding.
One idea is to use one of those blow-up kids pools and then make a tent around it with a post in the middle and then tuck the edges of the tent underneath the blow-up pool. I could still do this indoors and hence be able to control the temp. and also I could control the humidity.
My one major concern is contamination. Would I be able to stop contamination and can anyone see any other probs?

I think that it could work well for oysters, especially Pleurotus djamour which is a very fast grower and easly outgrows contaminants.
With Shiitake is a bit more complicated, it grows very slowly and needs low temperatures to fruit.
The best method to grow them outside is to inoculate logs and put them in a shady in moist location.

Growing mushrooms like that is not very profitable, maybe just some additional income.

to make $$ you'd need to cultivate very rare mushrooms - shiitake in bluk would make some $$ but it wuld be hard to keep the temps low enough for fruiting year around. Use sawdust blocks because they colonise quicker than logs and fruiting is also quicker. Shiitakes can also be grown on wheat straw

This is no get rich scheme cos umm... I think im in the wrong industry to get that sort of thing...just quietly....

No my hope is that i can single-handedly promote all mushrooms to the stage where they are once again revered as objects directly descended from GOD (or gods).....That is my only goal.....

On chips/sawdust/bran Shiitake can grow nearly as fast as Oysters. There are also many strains that fruit at relatively high temps
