Growing Gourmet Mushrooms Using a Cake Tek
    #1322517 - 02/20/03 01:44 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

I've been out of the loop for a while, haven't been able to indulge in my favorite hobby, mycology.
I want to start growing gourmet mushrooms again, but using the cake culture, because I live somewhere now with little to no extra space.

Are there any gourmet cultures that do well on cakes?

I'd be using a home-made pod type thing to grow em, because I work 2 jobs.

Any ideas?

I think just about any woodlover would produce on the following substrate. How well depends on specie and strain... Some woodlovers will produce more prolifically on this than others.

4 parts hardwood sawdust (Use 3 parts for higher supplement of bran)
1 part bran (i use quaker oatmeal)
1 part vermiculite
BY VOLUME, of course.

Mix well in large container, moisten to field capacity. Use a vermiculite seal if you arent using filter jars. This substrate CAN BE SHAKEN if desired...

This would work well for all oyster species, shittake, reishi, lion's mane --- but pretty much any woodlover. Hope this helps!
(my first post in quite a long time)

The problem seems to be that sawdust doesn't hold moisture as well as other substrate, or so it is claimed. The above recipe is a slight modification of 'alternate spawn media' listed in TMC. I add vermiculite to help with water retention, and in this case, vermiculite would help hold the substrate together for 'PF-Style Cakes'. That being said, i think the recipe would also produce without the vermiculite involved.

One more thing i forgot...

I tend to sterilize things twice as long as recommended... i sterilize this recipe for 2+ hours @ 15psi. Maybe its wishful thinking, but I have noticed that once this substrate is sterilized, it seems very selective... that is it doesn't seem to like to contam much... it prefers live tissue over spores for any species...
